Say what you will but I think that for enthusiasts, the new four-cylinder engine that BMW has put out is a failure.

Sure, it gets fantastic MPG and it is paired up with a fast and slick-shifting gearbox. Those things are fantastic.

But my God it sounds terrible. For your everyday consumer, it's great but for those that bleed oil, I think it's safe to say it's a letdown. From the inside to the outside it just does not capture that charm of BMW engines rocketing to the redline.

So now the conversation has shifted to BMW's all-new, three-cylinder powerplant. Will it finally turn things around with a sexy soundtrack OR will it be another Honda-like sounding motor?

The answer lies below, my friends.

Once you give the video a listen, let us know: Does BMW's all-new, three-cylinder engine sound like a STUD or a DUD?

BMW is no Ferrari, so who cares what its engine sounds like? The straight six is sweet but never excites.

But, kudos to BMW for further reducing weight up front and shifting balance rearward. That's what a DRIVER cares.

exactly what I was thinking. A lighter, more powerful, more efficient engine is a failure for enthusiasts because of the sound? Seriously? The sound trumps all those attributes? What kind of enthusiasts do you hang out with?

@dlin

If that's all "drivers" cared about, then they'd all be buying Mazda Miatas.

Sounds alot better than I thought, and it seems to accelerate quite well.

I've not heard the BMW turbo 4 cylinder engine. I've simply read comments on it. Most say it's slightly thrashy but reasonably quiet with very good performance. This 3 cylinder actually sounds quite good. I think it will be great in the version 3 of the Mini Cooper. This is a nice sounding engine. Stud
