Volkswagen Says Clean And Simple Is The Future Of Car Styling
Volkswagen's minimalist styling is the look of the future because the fad for flamboyant "overdesign" is finished, says Walter de' Silva, VW's global design chief.

The clean and simple designs of such VW nameplates as the Golf are timeless and produce better brand worth because they hold their resale value better, he said. "We are convinced that the long period of overdesign, too many lines, too much styling is dropping down," de' Silva told Automotive News at a Tokyo launch of the VW Up minicar.

They are wrong... The future is agressive with attention to detail...

Attention to detail, yes. If aggressive means Hyundai, whose cars are completely different with each generation, no. It hurts image and value. It is one of the contributing reasons for a used Sonata being worth much less than most of its competition.
The Golf theme is an old one. But, it was so "right" initially that it has never needed to deviate from the original concept. Econo-hatch that can occasionally haul furniture, is a driver's car, that will seat extra passengers and, when equipped right, can go like stink.
Because it is such a successful design, VW can flaunt it. And they should.

I agree wholeheartedly with him: simplicity *always* wins. Complex designs may be relevant only in their time period; simplicity is timeless. For evidence, look at the classic designs - Porsche, Aston Martin, 60s/70s muscle cars... older BMWs (sigh)...

I hope he is right, but I think we have another 5-10 years to go with the origami crap.
