The new Mercedes E-class may have got the looks, but does it have what it takes to take on its fiercest competitor from Bavaria, and the Japanese luxury sedan.

that mag company has it all wrong. IT said that the GS450h got to 60 mph in 6.4 seconds when on the lexus website, it say 5.2 seconds...

Those are European times, to 62 mph. Europeans usually quote more conservative times, the BMW and MB times are also higher. The best I have seen was 5.3. That is why European car manufacturers usually give space between the actual and quoted times to prevent any problems. The Audi S6 would also compete well with those cars, at a slightly higer price point.

Chewy - The S6 or the A6 4.2? These all looked like the V8 versions of the standard lines (i.e. not AMG, M, etc.) I would put the S in the performance lines.

Additionally this has to be one of the first reviews i've seen here lately that finally compares cars of the same class, but I do have one question, as much as I've been keeping up with the E, is it still the 500 or are they upping it to the 550 after refresh?

The MB will be the E550. The A6 4.2 can compete with those cars, with the 350 hp 4.2 V8. The S6 will be more expensive by some amount, but will have better performance with 435 hp.

Sometimes, what the car company claims cannot be achieved by the magazines no matter how hard they try. It's happened before.

Also, I think European cars get different gear ratios which are geared towards achieving better fuel economy at the expense of acceleration. I believe this might have been the case with these cars.

That is where the S6 comes in with a Lambo V10 packing 435 hp. Audi has two models to give you more choice.

CommonSense - I was the one asking about the A6 because I put the S6 in the same class as the performance cars: M5, E55, etc.

I've always had an issue on where to slot the S line of cars from Audi, especially since they have the RS line. It's like audi has two seperate performance lines whereas BMW and MB only have one.

I went on to the MB website, and they are selling the E 500 there, not the 550 that some people are asking about. So why would they review the 550 if it doesn't excist yet or is not out yet.

That magazine had it all wrong with the Lexus GS450 0-60 time mark. Because the last issue from Road&Track I belief it was one of the magazine in the U.S. it say that the GS450 did 0-60 in 5.3 second. Freaking just upp bias magazine toward japanese brand, do hate. Althought, I'm a Lexus fan but when MB and BMW has nice design I give them prop not Ivy it. I tell thing the way it is.

The BMW and the MB times are slower also. The BMW in the same RT test got in 5.0 seconds. Those are Different European times.

logical,

You don't seem very logical to me. Audis are heavier, but they make that up. Isn't it funny how BMW needs to put bigger engines almost every year to compete? The S6 will be in the similar price range as a top of the line 550i, how is it a joke?

What is wrong with Quattro? Nothing. There is a pretty good chance that Audi can make RWD car.

Chewy,

thank you for mentioning that, I got caught on the Lexus timing and forget to mention that MB and BMW is a little faster. I belief the MB and BMW was like 0.1 or 0.2 second faster. But you have to gave Lexus prop with a hybrid system that goes from 0-60 in 5.2 second. Ever wonder why Audi is not on the list? anyone here know why? no bia please, tire of that shit, tell the way it is. I belief it was Road&Track that have test this three cars. BMW 550i with 0-60 in 5.1 second, MB with 5.1 also and the Lexus GS450 came in from 0-60 in 5.2 second.

Lexus for life

I guranteed you that, the next generation Lexus GS will be faster than the MB E 500/550 and BMW 550i:) we just had to wait and find out. Only time will tell... :) ah..ha..ha..ha..ha.ha.. can you smell what Lexus is Cookin? How about a IS500 and the LF-A supercar... It only will be a matter of time? you cannot be on time forever. Lexus already prove that with their IS350 which beat both MB C-class, BMW 330i also in the 0-60 run. The IS350 goes 0-60 in 5.1 second and the new turbocharge BMW 330i with 302 horsepower when from 0-60 in 5.2 or 5.3 second.

Lexus

I don't agree with everything you say. But, recent Lexuses have had very nice styling. Also, the GS will get the 3.5 liter 306 hp V6, and the 4.6 liter V8 with about 380 hp in the future.

Chewy,

The GS350 will be 303 hp. Somewhat odd, why didn't they just go all the way and make it 306? Go figure.

mr un-logical, audi's model placement works fine. 4.2 competes with the 540, the s6 with the 550 and the rs6 with the m5.

Who cares which car is quickets to 60. My God, it's like a circus here.

"The Lexus GS450h does 0-60 in 5.2 seconds. But the BMW 550i is so slow because it takes 5.3 seconds!"

Jesus, 0-60 is irrelevant. It has nothing to do whether a car is good or not. There have been many great cars that were even slower to 60. For example, a 1980s Mercedes diesel anyone? Big deal. I couldn't care less if the GS450h owned the BMW 550i in acceleration. The GS hybrid has the advantage of an electric motor at low speed. Unlike a gasoline engine, the electric engines has torque and power ready at low speed / RPM and hence, the GS450h's respectable 0-60 time.

How can we argue about these cars 0-60 times when they they all do it in such low times? Any one of these is quick enough already.

its ass will be kicked. like all lexus', it will have no driver feedback and no engine sounds, and an automatic.

1995e34, what you suggest is ridiculously expenisive, audi would have to develop a new floorpan, re mount the engine, make new components for it, completely change the suspension set up, it would cost billions to develop a new thing like that. vw group just doesn't do rwd. and the drive components aren't already developed, it is seriously different. like where would the gearbox go? the drive shaft would have to be rerouted the clutch, the diff, the...oh well everything mechanical connected to the engine and wheels.

Most Audi's in Europe are FWD anyway (Quattro is an expensive option over there), I doubt Audi customers really care about RWD. Besides, AWD sport sedans (high end Audi's) have their charms.

RupertRupert - 8/1/2006 9:15:41 PM

yes but it means much simpler rear suspension, and fwd is used by all VAG products so it's easy. and the drivetrain is really different. don't know how, i'm not an engineer.
rwd probs costs more, think of all the extra parts like an actually driveshaft and a splitter in the back and more complicated suspension. thats why fwd was so popular in the 70s and 80s for america, it was cheap.

Mercedes Benz is best of the best carmakers.then BMW from bavaria is best.I think Lexus shouldn't compare by this companies and other german carmakers because Lexus and other japanese automakers is very lower from to compare by else.
