Obama Heralds Bailout On Radio Address - Did He Forget We Lost $25.1 Billion In The Process?
President Barack Obama heralded the turnaround of the U.S. auto industry in his weekly radio address — ahead of the second debate showdown Tuesday with Republican rival Mitt Romney.

Obama touted his decision to rescue General Motors Co. and Chrysler Group LLC as part of the $85 billion bailout — and he praised some new models hitting the showrooms.

"Just a few years ago, the auto industry wasn't just struggling — it was flatlining. GM and Chrysler were on the verge of collapse. Suppliers and distributors were at risk of going under. More than a million jobs across the country were on the line — and not just auto jobs, but the jobs of teachers, small business owners, and everyone in communities that depend on this great American industry," Obama said. "But we refused to throw in the towel and do nothing. We refused to let Detroit go bankrupt. We bet on American workers and American ingenuity, and three years later, that bet is paying off in a big way."

Obama did not mention that GM and Chrysler did in fact file for bankruptcy in the summer of 2009 — and the administration pushed the two into court restructuring as part of the bailout.

All the taxpayers have "lost" is 1.3 billion. The rest is an estimate, and the DetNews estimates the GM loss will be 14 billion at CURRENT prices. The stoock has been gaining solidly, up about 25% in the past couple months. Hence the difference between "most recent estimate" and where we are now.

So 009, it's disingenuous to lead with your headline. Big surprise. You take your cues from Lyin' Ryan and Etch-A-Sketch.

"The Treasury's most recent estimate is that taxpayers will lose $25.1 billion on the bailout. The government has booked a $1.3 billion loss on the $12.5 billion Chrysler bailout. It still holds a 26.5 percent stake in General Motors — or 500 million shares. At current prices, the Treasury would lose more than $14 billion on its $49.5 billion GM bailout."
Naturally, the numbers don't add up.

The man has no shame...he believes if you tell a lie often enough the dumb public who follow nothing or only hear the sound bite will believe it...the problem in our country now is that he just might be right !!!!
Read today's news where Government Motors is thinking of merging with Peugeot Citroen...a company loosing market share like a rock, choking on overcapacity, subsidized by a socialist government in a country where you cannot fire anybody. This is the kind of thinking you get when governments muck around in commercial industries they know nothing about!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! God help us.

Barack Obama has a chronic disassociation with the truth. The truth is he doesn't care how much money taxpayers lose on GM. His whole motivation in bailing out GM was to bail out his political supporters in the UAW. The more money the UAW gets their hands on, the more campaign money gets funneled to Obama's re-election campaign. The more likely he is to stay in power. That's it. Anyone who argues differently is either ignorant, dishonest or both.

I notice they are talking about the losses that govt is booking after the bailouts. What about the losses of jobs and revenue generated from those jobs if the bailouts had not happened. The unemployment costs? The further downward spiral in the economy?
I find it interesting that 2 post below this story the former chairman of gm is saying that weak management is the initial reason for the bailouts. When business was left to its on devices they got themselves in trouble and needed help.
So let me get this right. Business screws up and needs help, we help them. Then there's a backlash from the public because we did help them and not let it fail. Wtf?
I will be the one to call bullspit! Basically repubs and obviously a lot of the peckerheads on this site just don't want him in office cause they feel like they are losing a country they stole. I will play the racism card because its true. Looks to me that its a bunch of white guys upset because somebody called them on their game.
Reboots or ban me.... I don't care. I will get my auto news from Inside line!

If you want car manufacturing in your country, the government has to subsidize it. That is the way it is. Germany, Japan, France, Italy, South Korea, etc.

You all know very well that it was a choice between "Government Motors"
or a take down auto liquidation of GM and Chrysler taking Ford and 'All" the US auto parts suppliers with them. The government would have been stuck for the pension funds of both companies. That would have cost the taxpayer a lot more then 25 billion. There are a number of things I don't like about Obama.(I specifically don't like how he leads from behind). I also think HealthCare should have been pushed for his second term. By pushing it in his 1st term he forced Democrats to give up control of the house effectively stonewalling his ability to get any major reform past since 2010. However going to a Romney alternative would ultimately destroy the middle class and put the US in much more debt then anything Obama has done. Further like Bush we will utlimately get bogged down in another costly Middle East War with Syria or Iran. This is somthing we can no longer afford. So if your a rich Fat Cat I can understand your reason for voting for Romney. However if your not you must vote for Obama as the lessor of 2 evils. There is really no choice here.

The socialist LIAR in CHIEF and most INEPT president in U.S. history is a lying WIND BAG who is uniquely UNQUALIFIED to be an executive.

You may have voted for obama in 2008 to prove you were not a racist.

In 2012 you MUST vote for Romney to prove you are not an idiot!
