Second Generation Phaeton Confirmed - Is America Ready For A Six Figure Volkswagen?
Volkswagen plans to launch a second generation Phaeton sedan, R&D chief Ulrich Hackenberg told the media at the Sao Paulo motor show.

Although the Phaeton has never been a commercial success in its 10 years on the market, VW wants to continue the nameplate with an all-new model. According to Hackenberg, the new Phaeton would feel very new, as VW Group’s technology has moved on a lot since the Phaeton was launched in 2002.

IMAO........ I guess VW forgot how bad they did with the last Phaeton here in the U.S.? I would I paid $100,000 for VW when I can get LS600 hl, MB S-Class, BMW 750i, Audi A8 or even a slightly use Bentley Continental GT? IMAO...........

People who spend $100,000+ U.S. dollar on a car are paying for prestige and name plate.

Yes it will be a mistake to bring it to the U.S. but pleanty of Europeans and Asians will pay for it. You will never be able to afford it anyways, not sure why you would care.

BTW Not everyone who can pay for a $100K + car is a badgewhore.

@usna1999,

you don't even know who I am and what I do for a living so how do you know if I can or cannot afford a $100,000? LOL... I would rather use my money to buy house instead buying a $100,000 car.

And yes I agree with you that not everyone pay $100+ for a car is a badge whore BUT in this class that is what they paid for + comfortable ride and a list of luxury amenities.

Sorry Lexus,
I didn't meant it that way, maybe I was just a little ticked off since my request to transfer to the U.A.E. didn't get approved:(
I could have easily afford a $100K car then.

Lexus,
Just a question... what do you know about this car that is not even out yet? You are passing lots of judgement on the car's luxury standards and amenities and its not even out yet.

"Lexus,

- That's what Lexus fans do. They claim superiority before the car is even released. They don't see how annoying and presumptuous an attitude like that really is. Then when reality kicks in and the car isn't superior at anything, they say stuff like "Nice Effort". By far the worse car fans ever.

Let the attack begin...

apology accepted. You're not the Only one my friend. I wanted to work in U.A.E as well because I know for a fact that I can make $250k dollars a year easily but there no market for my field.

"She's baaaaack!

How was band camp?"

- Remember this? And I'm sure that this isn't the only time someone other than me has called you out.

A little context first. "AngyInch1", "Pondosinatra"... Sry, his new screen name "LexSucksBoyz" tried to bully and insult someone who dared disagree with him. This was the users response back to him.

"First off you do not own an S65amg, or any of the other cars you have claimed on the other threads. Judging by the amount of time you DO spend on here arguing/harassing people with your little kitty avatar there is no way you acquired enough money to buy a $200k S65amg let alone move out of you mothers basement." - merce63amg

"little kitty avatar" Super funny!!! LOL!!

Oh yeah.. Why do you need to change your screen name as often as the seasons change?

"hahaha, look at you and your sock puppet accounts deboosting, how adorable!!!”

- You're too amusing to ignore. LOL!! I didn’t deboost you yet. You’ve earned those deboosts on pure merit. Feel proud. People deboost you because you are a thread hijacking, bitter, internet bully that attacks, and insults people that disagree with you.

“Do they also ragequit then crawl back here? What happened, get picked on at Edmunds too? hahaha!!! Jump, puppy jump!”

- What are you talking about? I’m not on Edmunds. Funny!!

Talk to you later “Angryinch1”, “Pondosinatra”, or now your new name that I inspired you to create. A name you said that you created to demonstrate how lame my screen name is. But my screen name isn’t lame and you know it. Just repeat it back to yourself... “LexSucks”... doesn’t that make you chuckle? lol!! It’s a freaking classic and the main reason why you attack and harass me.

Now go ahead and get back to hijacking threads, and harassing everything I post. You must think that's a good look... It isn't

I see two main issues with bringing the Phaeton back to the U.S.

1. VW's trend of ever larger VW insignias on the hood and trunk.
Learn from Hyundai/Kia, leave the VW platters off of the car.

2. Lack of model availability has always drawn criticism of VW and I see it getting worse for the Phaeton.

If I wanted to buy a $120k A8, there are seven dealers within twenty minutes that will have at least a few options per. VW has a small dealer network and anything outside of a Golf or Jetta seems to have limited availability.

Ferdinand Piech is a miniacle, iron fisted Germanic leader who has forced many good changes by his pure will and unquestionable Porsche lineage on VW directly resulting in its recent successes. At the same time he can not bring himself to admit he is mortal (afterall he has 12 children by four different woman as he does as he pleases) and made a mistake with the ist generation Phaeton. His command to the troops at VW is "You will do it again and again until you get it right or I will find someone who will !"

NO! People barely buy six figure Audis, unless it’s a discounted Lambo.

Well considering the A8 only accounted for 2.8% of gobal sales last year, and probably only a fraction of those were high end models..

Well, I wouldn't expect a 100K car to outsell 30-40K cars... did you?

Audi sold over 1MM cars last year globally. 2.8% is 28K. Plus the R8, so you you are looking at a decent amount of 100K Audis out there... plus, as you mention, lamborghinis, so you are probably looking at nearly 35K. Thats actually selling a lot of 100K cars.

PQ40PQ40 - 10/26/2012 9:10:03 AM

The A8 starts around 70K, and in most markets the most popular versions are the 2.0t or 3.0 diesel. The only versions that would actually break 100K is the W12, and the S8. Plus audi only sold 3000 R8s globally last year so the number is most likely around 10K units a year. Also I was referring to the R8 as a discounted Lamo. Lambo is a separate entity.

I believe the first generation Phaeton had paved the way for the current VW models being seen as the "upscale" choices in their respective classes. The image and standards of this generation of VWs have benefitted tremendously from the first generation phaeton.

It is almost like the Phaeton is a money losing model for VW but it serves as a sacrafice to pave the way for the lower models to shine brighter.

@ThierryHenry14,

I'm pretty sure this car will offer a lot of the same luxury and amenities that the Audi A8, MB S-Class, Lexus LS600hl and BMW 750i.

But why would I paid $100,000 for a VW badge when I can get an Audi, MB, BMW or Lexus Badge? And with $100,000 U.S dollar I could easily find a slightly use Bentley Continental GT as well.

People in this class paid this kind of money for a car give them a comfortable ride and a list of luxury amenities and the prestige badge that come with it.

Do you Seriously think people that buy this car to drag race each other on the street? LMAO.......... Get me break.

Would I spend $100,000 on this car NO..... I just rather use it as a down payment for a nice house instead.

The biggest problem VWNA will have isn't the price but rather the competition. Some posts have already alluded to ownership experience, or the lack thereof, at local VW dealers. People who are willing to spend 6 figures on a car have lots of choices and won't put up with shabby dealerships. VWNA is going to have to ensure their dealers cater to potential buyers or this car, no matter how good it may be, will also be a loss.

Another issue is who the target competion really is for this car. Some recent reports indicate that it's going to be Jaguar XK, A-6, 5-series and Lexus cars rather than the larger cars. It doesn't make any sense, however, to offer a 6-figure car in that market so if the price is truely going to be in that range then the most likely targets are the S class, 7 Series, their own A-8s.

Competition is always good for the consumer so I look forward to seeing what VW will offer. If VWNA doesn't do things right then there will be some very nice cars for sale at discount prices for the savey consumer.
