VIDEO: Texas Kicks Off New 85 MPH Autobahn With 200 MPH Test Run

It's safe to say the entire country is drooling over Texas' Autobahn, the new; $1.5 billion highway near Austin with an 85-mile-per-hour speed limit, the nation's highest. Even the New York Times is jealous.

Driving 85 mph is nothing new for Texans, who already go that fast on normal roads. It's only natural then that, by way of inaugurating the new road, Lieutenant Governor David Dewhurst would encourage his pal John Hennessey to drive even faster.

I bet that makes Ray LaHood go bonkers.

What?

One of my states allowing 220 MPH on a public highway? Actually it is a PRIVATE highway.

Not sure about Ray LaHood as I don't think every friggin thing has to be political. However I do think 85 on most highways out west is quite reasonable. Keep the big rigs at 60 and in the right lane though...

why keep big rigs at 60? that difference in speed between big rigs and cars would cause all kinds of accidents. Let them do 70-75.

Most of the time they won't even stop you on the highway unless you are 12 to 15 over. 70 mph is a "suggested" speed in most cases. 85 MPH is more realistic on the new highways here

The highway is not private, so where you got that idea is unclear. As to keeping trucks at 60, it is quite correct that differences in speed are what cause accidents and not absolute speeds.
