Despite continued steep losses in Europe, Ford Motor Co.'s third-quarter profits beat analysts' expectations thanks to a highly profitable North American region.

The Dearborn automaker on Wednesday posted a $1.63 billion profit in the third quarter — a slight decline compared to the $1.65 billion profit from the same quarter a year ago.
