If you make good quality cars that last and have great mileage, and made in USA - then it makes complete sense - maybe Detroit should bring car production back from Mexico and Canada back to USA - you think you are buying american, but you really are not - the acclaimed Chrysler 300 is made in Brampton Ontario! The Toyota Camry is made in Kentucky! You support more americans buying Toyota than the big three! Is big three still applicable?

The american car companies have no idea what sells. They have totally lost the youth market so the future looks bleak. Over priced workforce makes the turnaround impossible. The top twenty toyota senior managers makes the same as rick wagoner something wrong with that. You can not keep selling SUV and pickups!

I don't believe the reason for GM and Ford's failures is the price of the workforce, or Unions. I believe its incompetent Executives who failed in their duty to be effective strategic thinkers.

The new product development portfolios of both companies are woefully short of any likely "smash hits". Executives are responsible for corporate investment priorities and not the workforce in general.

The Executives have spent so much time in the last decade or so lobbying Congress and regulators not to increase full economy standards, when they should have been doing scenario planning.

The Executives have chosen to develop cars and vehicles for the rest of the world which cannot easily be engineered for the US market. Ford and GM have plenty of models in Europe, Asia and Australia and Latin America - but these were not created to be global platforms or vehicles.

Now GM and Ford are paying the price for milking the truck market and feeding the bigger is better mindset of some segments of the US market.

Problem is I wish it was just the Executives that paid the price and not the workforce.
