Game Changer? Audi Approves Range Topping Q8 SUV To Take On Range Rover

Audi has given the thumbs-up to the new Q8 range-topper, CAR understands. It's a high-end SUV crossover to crown the brand's burgeoning range of planned, sportier 4x4s and tackle the likes of the new Range Rover.

The Audi Q8 will be based on the long-wheebase edition of the next MLB architecture. Baffled by acronyms? Basically, the Q8 will ride on the hardware developed for the next-gen Audi Q7/Porsche Cayenne/VW Touareg. Our artist's impression depicts how it could look.

Why would they try to take on RR they don't sell that many and are close to the bottom in reliability.....

More Q7s sold in the UK and Europe than Range Rovers......

But why let facts get in the way of your stupidity ?

@I95, I believe his knock was against RR, not Audi. If I read it correctly he was asking why Audi would go after a such an unreliable brand in a niche with so few sales.

The car business is becoming more and more competitive because of excess capacity and the poor economies around the world (with just a few exceptions). To keep their factories open manufactures are developing models to chase every sale in every segment. They all want volume from the lower end of the market and profits from the higher end of the market. In the short term this is great for consumers, offering them more choices and keeping prices somewhat suppressed...that is until the day of reckoning when major plant closings occur, more brands go away and the surviving companies seek thru higher prices to make up for losses in the past.

If it looks like the pic above then no thanks. Audi need to do something new with their design like add some personality to it, b/c they currently look cold and boring like an appliance.

Of course more Q7's would sell vs. the RR since there's a substantial price difference. So, they are not direct competitors today anyway. which makes sense why Audi would want to target that segment. Benz currently competes with the GL.

Audi MUST move away from their current design language, though as it's very dated (for their SUVs).
