TOYOTA Said To Be Moving Forward With A Next-Gen Supra - What Does It NEED To One Up Everyone Else?
For many autonuts out there, there is one ultimate vehicle. That, my friends, is the Toyota Supra.

While I still do not understand all of the fuss over the original and last generation product, one thing is certain, it has a lasting power for a large percentage of the gearhead population. I guess I can make a similar case for the Scion FR-S and Subaru BRZ. For me, until the BRZ comes along I am not intrigued.

Now word is hitting the web that one of Toyota's head honchos has been asked to get to work on the next-gen Supra. Of course this has been a longtime coming and I like to think that the LFA, FR-S/BRZ project and both of their respective praise has sent Toyota in a mad dash to continue its attempt to conquer the sports car kingdom.

That's all good and well, but that begs the question:

What does the next-gen Supra need to compete in today's auto climate? Who should it compete with?

Think -- should it compete with the likes of the BMW M3 or Nissan GT-R?

Don't expect results very soon as EVO notes that Toyoda revealed any successor would take upwards of five years to develop. Not surprising considering how much work went into the creation of the LFA.

Chief Toyota designer Tetsuya Tada has confirmed that he has been asked to pen the successor to the Supra - which is in early stages of development.

Speaking to Asia One, Tada confirmed that Toyota President Akio Toyoda has approved a follow-up Supra, to be done 'as soon as possible'...

...The Supra’s development could be in motion as soon as 2014 with Toyoda revealing that any successor 'would need five years to develop...'

...Man, no matter what design they bring, the Supra will be the Star of the show! There are millions upon millions of people waiting for the Toyota Supra's return. Trust me, the rivalry should be between the GT-R and the renowned Toyota Supra Turbo.

It depend what Toyota sales goal is. If they're looking to selling it to the mass than make it perform just as good or better than the BMW M3, MB C63 AMG, Audi RS5 and the Lexus IS-F but price little less then the competitors.

But if they really want to earn more "Respect" from can fanatic and play with the "Big Boys" than make a Toyota Supra with a twin turbo V6 or twin turbo V8 with 560+ hp.

So that they have something to against the Nissan GT-R, Honda NSX, Porsche 911/turbo/turbo S, Audi R8 V8/V10, Lambo Gallardo and Ferrari F458 Italia (performance wise).

Hey VW own the following brands and cars and have them compete against each other like the Audi R8 V8/V10 vs Porsche 911/turbo/turbo S, and Lambo Gallardo all compete in the same market with similar customers base. So why not Toyota and Lexus.

Keep up the good work Toyota!!

...Good details -Lexus. Good point about their sales goal. I'm sure they have already have their data on customer feedback and whatever demands the Supra may have at this stage in the economy because the Supra has more iconic influence than it had than even the 93-2002 model yrs gone by. Cant wait to see just what Mr Akio Toyota has approved regarding the budget on their iconic legend's return.

The people who are longing for a Supra are the future group who currently long for the BRZ and FR-S.

They should price it over $100K and give it all the goodies the LF-A has. The people who can remember the original Supra can afford it now if it hits 6 figures. You have to pay to play and it keeps the Koreans from copying it right away. Even their gov't isn't going to let them lose $50K/car on a Supra clone, especially since they're losing money on every other export they have.
