BMW plots new junior M-car
BMW is hatching plans for a hot entry-level M model based around a new saloon version of the second-generation 1-series.

The compact four-door aims to provide BMW with a direct rival to the upcoming Mercedes-Benz CLA45 AMG and Audi S3 saloon. The new BMW has already been earmarked to run a highly strung 2.0-litre turbo engine with at least 300bhp.

However, because of the heavy engineering workload facing BMW on existing new model development, the compact M Performance saloon is unlikely to hit the UK until the latter half of 2015 at the earliest.

“We are actively considering it,” said a high-ranking BMW insider. “Do we think there is a potential market? Yes, and it is likely to grow rapidly. If we had the capacity, we would already be well down the road [to production] by now.”

Internal BMW studies reveal that the market for compact performance saloons is set for high growth in key high-volume markets, such as China and North America. With both the S3 saloon and CLA45 AMG due to arrive before the end of next year, BMW officials are keen to fast-track the new model, possibly with contracted engineering, according to sources within automotive component supplier ranks...

Bring it on. This is BMW's chance to ignite enthusiats' enthusiasm and do real brand building at a price point open to many. It can be the size, the weight, the performer and simple machine to make magic again for this brand that has moved too far upmarket, too compromised, too luxurious and too pricey for its legion of loyal "ultimate drivers."

Funny thing is every car in the M5's class weighs around 4300lbs...knock one, you have to knock them all. Also the S6 only matches the M5 to 60, any speed above 60, and in all other performance measures the M5 destroys the S6, and can lap the ring as fast a panamera turbo s for 80K less...

I thought they have already confirmed that the next 7 series will be using the carbon fiber technology they developed on i8.

They did! The 7 will be the first regular series BMW to extensively use carbon fiber/aluminum, followed by the next 5, and 3 when they come out.

The current BMW 'M' cars have become very pricey. It is good that BMW is moving to address the needs buyers who want an M car but at a far more affordable price.

I only hope that the new mini M cars will indeed be affordable and will not immediately migrate upwards in price. Also, having rear wheel drive is essential IMO for a true 'sports car' experience with proper handling characteristics. Every front wheel drive car I have ever driven suffers from hideous torque steering and gross under steer.
