Audi should enter races against more competition. Who do they race against in Lemans? Themselves basically...if I recall, BMW took Lemans at the end of the century and went on the bigger and better things.

Cpillar- They dominate Lemans and also the GT series. The GT series is basicly production cars. From what I know about BMW racing is that they are not doing that well but I could be wrong.

2nd Audi uese Lemans to develop tech for their street cars. FST, TDI etc. Formula 1 has dosen't realy help BMW with their producion cars.

What GT series are you refering to? They dominate Lemans - but how many factory teams do they race against there?

BMW has used F1 technology in brakes, safety, carbon fiber use, heads up display and, well engines on the M3, M5 and M6....no doubt that Audi has been able to use FSI and TDI in production cars as well.

That's a pretty lame comeback from Audi. Who cares if they win at Le Mans? That doesn't translate into making good street cars.

CPillar- Lemans has become an Audi fest because they ran the competition off. Porsche ran to LMP2, BMW never has competed with the big boys in LMP1, preferring to pick off the slower GT classes. Mercedes MAY reneter in GT classes as well.

HOWEVER both BMW and Mercedes have HUGE expenditures in F1 where Audi hasn't competed since the 1930's. So to take one both ALMS LMP1 would be very costly.

Frankly I agree with IamEvilHomer. Lemans tends to be a direct transferrance of technology to production. But F1 seems to more of an image thing with less of a direct impact to end product.

Cpillar- heads up display from F1, where, there is no windscreen to speak of. Please name the BMW advances in F1 that made it to actual production. I can see them coming from other forms of racing but not from F1. At least with ALMS there is a more direct path.

The World Street Car of the Year has more value than six consecutive Le Mans 24 hour races. F1 is the pinnacle of all motor sport racing, when Audi gets the courage to join the big boys and pulls off two consecutive championships then we can talk.

Audi also had World Car of the Year in 2005 with the A6.

SMG, the carbon fiber roof (and bumpers)on the M3CSL and M6, MS65 engine management system, the 10 flow optimised trumpets in the M5/M6 engine, one piece aluminum cylinder heads, the bedplate design for the crankcase and many others all came from F1. There's alot more too....

BMW also won LeMans in 1999 with the LMRV12..been there, done that......the M3 cleaned up in the GT category, the 3 series swept the WTTC last year....

Yeah the World Street Car of the Year is more than 6 wins of the LeMans, but BMW's arrogance is getting to be annoying. Why are they even concerned with Audi's success...Oh I almost forgot: Audi is right behind them about to catch up.

BM3W- Audi got World Car of the Year last year and BMW got it this year. There has been no changes to the cars in both years so I guess they are both good cars?

What's an Audi - we don't take kindly to underachievers in these parts!. Lets focus on real brands like Mercedes, BMW, Lexus, Cadillac, Acura, and others who play a meaningful role in the US.

cadillac? a real brand? a reskinned yukon doesn't do it for "real" brands. same for acura. audi at least has its own platforms.

First of all guys, Bentley won 2003 Lemans... Although its an Audi Engine, Audi R8s were running the race, and the Speed8s (#7 and #8) finished first and second...

2000-2006 is seven years, so "six consecutive" doesn't make sense anyway...if this was real then you'd expect the ad people to be able to count.

Cpillar - Audi entered ALMS in 2000 and since then no one other than a VAG produced car has won the race or the championship ever since the first year. BMW was run off after one victory in the entire history of Lemans. BTW they have NEVER won the championship.

I agree BMW 3 series is a class winner no doubt, however they race the 3 series in about 20 different racing series throughout the world. Bascially like a little NASCAR vehicle for them, set them up all the same (basically) and go. Is the 3 series a one shot wonder for them?

Cpillar - correction Audi actually entered ALMS at the end of 1999. The first full season they dismembered the competition.

Ask McNish about the HUD - he saw it quite a bit when he was a dismal failure in the big leagues of F1.

3 Series a one shot wonder? Well, it is the most successful touring car in history. What does Audi have? BMW has won Leamns, Touring Car, F1., Mile Miglia, 24 Hours of the Nurburgring - which is arguably the most difficult/challenging track in the world..I'd like to see Audi have the audacity to compete in racing series with manufacturer competition other than just themselves....
By the way, if Quattro is so great, why doesn't Audi challenge Mitsubishi with their 6 straight (yes - they actually won six straight) victories in the Paris-Dakar rally. Once again, Audi is ducking the competition...their strong suit is Quattro, so why won't they step up?

What you guys don't realize is that how a car manufacturer does in racing dictates the sale of their cars.
It may not apply here in the U.S but it really does in Europe.
I'm surprised none of you mentioned the German DTM race where Audi totally dominated last year in the 1 year back after several years of absence because they got banned for their "unfair advantage".
Audi was named in Germany, "The Sportiest brand".
More people showed up and watched Le mans for the past few years than F1.
Personally, I love F1, but I find Le Mans to be more interesting.
It is much harder than F1 as the cars do in 24 hours what a F1 car will do in a whole season...

BMW is free to come back. Instead of spending 400 million dollars a year in F1 with no results. Acura and Peugeot is coming next year. It isn't Audis fault that the competition left. Also, the R8 was intentionally slowed down so it won't beat others by to much. Cadillac tried to compete with the R8 but failed miserably. The R8 has been the most succesfull sports car racing ever.

Cpillar- Audi dominated the rally scene in the 80's and hearlded in the AWD cars that are there now. been there done that. ALMS is a series with other makes in the competiton.

Audi has won the SpeedWorld Challenge series with the S4, S6, and the TT. It also dominated IMSA GTO racing in the 80's till AWD was outlawed. They have always competed in the DTM series, where BMW is strangley absent. Plus numerous other series over the last 20 years.

It is true that they are not in F1, the biggest issue is that unlike other brands in F1, Audi is trying to figure out eactly the benefits other than prestifge it will bring to the consumer. They have this thing called cost accountability.

Giving credit to BMW for coming up with "heads-up" displays is a little bit of a stretch. The technology was actually developed by the Hughes corporation. (Yes, that's Howard Hughes' company) When GM purchased the aeronautics division decades ago, the technology came with the company. That's why you've seen them on GM cars almost exclusively for years. I guess they must have sold off some of the rights to the technology to BMW in recent years or else the patents may have run out. That's how OLD it is!

Both companies probably had a laugh about the advertisements. I know I would be. It's just all friendly competition and it's all fair game as well.
