LA AUTO SHOW: Audi Debuts FOUR NEW Diesel Models - Are These Fuel Sippers What You've Been Waiting For?
Audi's press release follows:

Audi to introduce four new TDI® clean diesel models to the U.S. Market at the L.A. Auto Show

- The Audi A8 TDI clean diesel achieves manufacturer estimated fuel efficiency of 24 city/ 36 highway
- New 3.0 liter V6 TDI clean diesel models will include the Audi A8, A7, A6, Q5 and an updated Q7 TDI
- Audi to use #FuelForThought at the LA Auto Show to create a social media experience at the display and online

Audi of America announces the arrival of the new TDI® clean diesel models for the Audi A8, A7, A6 and Q5 to debut at the Los Angeles Auto Show. The addition of these four models marks the first time Audi will feature a full lineup of TDI clean diesel vehicles in the U.S. as they join the updated Q7 model. Each TDI vehicle delivers up to 30% better fuel economy and 30% lower carbon dioxide emissions than gasoline engines*, resulting in longer range and fewer trips to the fuel pump. By having more density than gasoline, diesel packs more energy content in the same amount of fuel, which helps maximize the miles per gallon when that energy is released during a more powerful combustion cycle.

The TDI clean diesel engine lineup adds to Audi’s list of advanced technologies that help enhance fuel efficiency, including Audi ultra® lightweight technology, such as the use of aluminum, and the AFS® frame technology.

“Owners of Audi TDI engines have helped save over 4 million gallons of gasoline, or the equivalent of more than 240,000 barrels of foreign oil, since the introduction of Audi TDI to the U.S. in 2009**,” said Scott Keogh, President, Audi of America. ” And, TDI technology delivers better fuel efficiency without sacrificing performance.”

In order to fuel the conversation surrounding the benefits of TDI technology in the U.S., Audi will use the hashtag, #FuelForThought and invite fans to join the conversation through a social experience at the display and online.

Audi A8 TDI
The flagship of the Audi brand, the A8 TDI, makes a powerful statement in achieving a manufacturer estimated fuel efficiency of 24 MPG in the city and 36 MPG on the highway*. The A8 TDI clean diesel executive sedan embodies superior design and progressive advancements which sets new standards for luxury sedans in terms of uncompromising efficiency and performance. The new 2014 A8 sedans dramatically expand the flagship’s engine offerings by moving from two variants (4.2 liter V8 and W12) to five, including: the entry level A8 3.0T V6; the 420 horsepower A8 4.0T V8; the new Audi S8 4.0T V8; the A8 6.0 liter W12; and the new A8 3.0 TDI V6. The new 3.0 liter TDI clean diesel engine generates an astonishing 240 horsepower with 406 lb.-ft. of torque and seamlessly goes 0-60 in 6.4 seconds.

Audi A7 TDI

The Audi A7 TDI clean diesel is the pinnacle of design and is now more fuel efficient than ever. Without compromising design or performance, every detail of the A7 TDI delivers a striking visual statement. The A7 was the first car in the world to feature available factory-installed Wi-Fi (for up to 8 passenger devices) with Audi connect™ and MMI® navigation plus with 3D Google Earth™ maps. From the groundbreaking available MMI touch and its gracefully integrated display screen, to the state-of-the-art head-up display, the Audi A7 TDI is the perfect marriage of progressive design, efficiency and versatile space.

Audi A6 TDI
One of Audi’s most innovative and technologically advanced models to date, the A6 TDI performance sedan sacrifices virtually nothing in performance, comfort or design. As with the successful A6 TFSI® gas engines, the A6 TDI clean diesel engine can make up to 2,000 decisions per second. Available driver assistance systems include night vision assistant, head-up display and Audi pre sense plus that helps detect imminent collisions and initiates protective measures when needed. Other available intelligent features include head-up display and the MMI touch that recognizes handwriting, along with the available Audi connect – the first factory-installed wireless internet connection that enables Google Earth maps, Google Local Search, and a WiFi hotspot for up to eight passenger devices.

Audi Q5 TDI
The Audi Q5 has proven itself an absolute success as one of the best-selling models in the Audi lineup. For the 2014 model year, the Q5 will receive the new TDI engine which will allow for better fuel economy along with increased torque. The Audi Q5 TDI combines the driving appeal of a sedan with high versatility of its interior space and many practical solutions for recreation and everyday driving. Audi has further sharpened the profile of its performance SUV in its design, technological advancements, driver assistance systems and fuel efficiencies. The new TDI clean diesel engine marks the fourth engine variant for the Audi Q5 model lineup, adding to the current four-cylinder 2.0T, the 3.0T V6, and the Q5 hybrid.

Audi Q7 TDI

The Audi Q7 continues to establish the standard in progressive design, sophisticated technology and fuel efficiency in premium sport utility vehicles. The benefits of TDI clean diesel technology are further enhanced through the revised V6 TDI engine that offers a 10 percent efficiency improvement compared to gasoline engines. The revised TDI clean diesel engine has an increased output of 240 horsepower and 406 lb-ft of torque that helps improve performance and offers impressive fuel economy with an EPA estimated 19 city/ 28 highway miles per gallon*. The incredibly efficient TDI clean diesel engine enables the Q7 TDI to achieve a range in excess of 700 miles per tank***.

And where did you find those "estimates"?

Not "estimates" they are from Diesel driver mag.

But go to BMW.co.uk and Audi.co.uk

This is euro cycle

A8 3.0 TDI 250hp combined cycle 44.1 mpg 0-60 6.1
730d 258hp combined cycle 50.4 mpg 0-60 6.1

A8 4.2 TDI 350hp Combined cycle 38.2 mpg 0-60 5.5
740D 313hp Combined cycle 49.6 mpg 0-60 5.5

A6 2.0 TDI 177hp Combined cycle 56.5 mpg 0-60 8.2

So once the EPA estimates for the diesel BMWs come out they will match those?

PQ40PQ40 - 11/30/2012 1:35:41 PM

No, they will just be better than Audis.

chewychewy - 11/30/2012 2:40:15 PM

If you say so. More than likely they will be within 1-2 mpg of each other for either brand in either direction just how the Q7 and X5 and M diesels are all fairly close to each other.

Q7 EPA: 19/28 (22). Euro: 31.78 combined
X5: 19/26 (22). Euro: 31.78
M class: 20/28 (23). Euro: 31.78-34.6
Touareg: 20/29 (23). Euro: 32.7

The q7 makes 240hp and X5 265hp yet are almost identical in mpg.

Its not really a matter of me saying so.Its fact. The combined euro figures for BMW models posted above are significantly higher than Audis. The car that gets the better economy in Europe will still get the better economy in the US.

chewychewy - 11/30/2012 4:35:24 PM

The X5 is more powerful, but these newest TDIs should be a bit more powerful than what was sold here in the US recently. Like I said give or take a 1-2 mpgs is likely but explained by various factors.

However, Mr. Factmaster can you please explain how an Audi A8 TDI is rated at an average of 36.8 mpg in Europe but 24/36 on the EPA test but the MB E350 Bluetec is rated at 40.5 mpg in Europe but is only good for 22/32 in the US? Come on Mr. Factmaster please enlighten me.

PQ40PQ40 - 12/1/2012 10:17:56 AM

Do you have a source for your combined cycles? lol. Because if you go to Mercedes.co.uk and audi.co.uk the stated combined cycle for E350 bluetec is 41.5 mpg, and the stated combined cycle for the A8 3.0 is 44 to 47mpg depending if it has awd. So...the EPA number are consistent with the euro figures. The car that got the better mpg across the atlantic, still had the better mpg in america.

So yes the BMW models I posted above which will be coming to the US do, and will get better MPG than comparable Audis.

I went to Audi.de and The mercedes german website. Is the world going to end for you if an Audi TDI gets better fuel economy than a BMW diesel, how are you coping with Audi's new 4.0T getting better mpgs than comparable BMW engines or do you just ignore reality as there is no way a Bentley powered Audi can do such a thing?

chewychewy - 12/1/2012 3:13:25 PM

Audi UK: A8 3.0 TDI quattro 44 mpg
MB UK: E350 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY: 45.6 the one that is powered by diesel

So these are practically the same in UK yet Audi will get quite a bit higher EPA ratings. You posted the mpg for the gasoline E350, nice try.

'Is the world going to end for you if an Audi TDI gets better fuel economy than a BMW diesel'

No lol, but it seems it may for you if BMW beats Audi...Considering you had to dig to hard to find one anomaly. There is always an exception to the rule, but the exception is not the rule. Regardless the Mercedes E and Audi A8 are with in 1-1.5 mpg of each other in Europe, and that translates to the US.

The differences between the Audi and BMW models are not 1-2 mpg...The BMW models on average are 5-10 mpg better on a combined cycle not 1-2.

The BMW models have a clear advantage, and it will translate to any measure of consumption. Spin away.

GermanNutGermanNut - 11/30/2012 11:40:49 AM

BMW better hurry up because the 7-Series Diesel will be a year behind Audi's A8. Also, how are the BMW diesels going to perform?

Audi has struck a wonderful balance of fuel economy and performance.

PQ40PQ40 - 11/30/2012 12:19:48 PM

The smart buyer will hold out, since the 7 gets better mpg. Plus BMW will have a 3 series diesel which gets astonishing mpg, no diesel A4 on the cards for the Us yet..

BMW must have struck a better balance, b/c in europe their diesels have best in class echonomy and performance.

PatronusPatronus - 11/30/2012 12:29:18 PM

No, Audi is blowing it on this one. They should introduce the low-end first: A3, A4, A5 and maybe Q5 TDIs first, then the high end.

Of course Audi has TDIs in all of these models in other parts of the world, but the US marketing weenies don't get it.

GermanNutGermanNut - 11/30/2012 12:31:33 PM

The problem is that the "smart" buyer is unaware of these plans by BMW since the plans have not yet been made public.

A diesel A3 sedan is coming in 2013 as a 2014 model.

Patronus, Audi already has an A3 diesel in hatchback form in the U.S.

The all-new A3 sedan launched in 2013 will come with a diesel.

The A4 doesn't have a diesel yet because an all-new A4 will be launched in 2014, at which point Audi will offer a TDI diesel engine.

Yep, waiting 'till next gen A4/A5 which will come with a newer 2.0 TDI and perhaps quattro.

So it's not impressive because the all wheel drive, bigger A8, gets 5 more highway and 4 more city?

chewychewy - 11/30/2012 1:30:05 PM

Considering the ILX with 150 horsepower is only good for 24/35 I am somewhat impressed by a much bigger, more powerful all wheel drive A8 getting same city and 1 extra highway. And that's for a diesel that is underrated by the EPA test.

The RLX e AWD is actually pretty exciting, the first Acura to breakout past the low 300s, first with 6+ gearbox, maybe even a chance for an Acura to break into the 4s? The forecasted mpgs are impressive but you know that the EPA test is highly friendly to hybrids.

I was hoping for the 2.0 TDI for the Q5, but if Audi has them available before VW has a TDI Tiguan or the announced 3 row, then a Q5 will likely replace my Tig.

No it doesn't. The auto is rated at 23/33 and the manual is rated at 22/34 and the A8 is just a bit bigger than the 3 series if I am correct.

In Europe people buy Diesels because of the tax benefits compared to gas engines...in the States, people buy Diesels to SAVE money thru better mileage...These Cars are not anything like your College English Professor's 240d...Not Practical,...have you tried pricing a WATER COOLED ALTERNATOR lately? And if you could afford the Car...Why would you give a Rats Arse about mileage?
