MotorTrend: BMW 335i Sport Finishes in LAST Place Versus the Cadillac ATS and Mercedes-Benz C350 Sport!!
I think the problem here is that we have got three second-place cars, I said to my colleagues Scott Evans and Mike Febbo as we sat down to a late lunch after a day of hard driving. The task at hand was to sort out a finishing order for our three contenders. Surprise, surprise -- there are no perfect cars. But in terms of the $50K six-cylinder luxury sport sedan segment, we were stymied -- at first -- by three of the best.

I'd easily take the C350Sport over the ATS. Better all-around car, IMO. I do like the 335i, but it's just getting so expensive and that interior….

Let's hear the BMW fanboys' excuses now!!

BMW has been getting crushed in comparison tests from MotorTrend, Car and Driver, Road and Track etc.

The BMW M5, 5-series, 7-series, X5 and now the bread and butter 3-series all LOST to various competitors (mostly Audis but now Cadillac and Mercedes-Benz too).

PQ40 is upset that Audi's 2012 YTD sales growth BOTH in the U.S. and globally is better than BMW's and BMW's global lead over Audi has decreased more than 50% in 2012 alone.

Actually BMW has been widening the gap over the last few months!

Yeah Audi is great, I love that A6's and euro passats/ Jettas
are made in the same factory!!

Actually Porsches are made right alongisde VW and Audi models in a couple of plants.

The PORSCHE CAYENNE is made in the same factory as the Q7 and the TOUAREG in BRATISLAVA SLOVAKIA.

"The facility currently manufactures two separate vehicle groups. Its portfolio includes large vehicles such as the VW Touareg and Audi Q7 cross/utility vehicles and bodies for the Porsche Cayenne CUV, as well as VW Group’s New Small Family cars, the auto maker’s smallest."

http://wardsauto.com/plants-amp-production/vw-expanding-slovakia-plant-output

The Cayenne (body shell) is made in the same factory as the $10,000 VW UP. Surely the smart folks at Porsche knew about that and they weren't hoodwinked by those deceiving conniving Volkswagen people. Maybe because there is no freaking difference in quality and the work done by the VW plant is perfectly good enough for a 150,000 dollar Porsche Cayenne Turbo S.

Like I said, put down the hatorade or otherwise you might get an overdose.

The keywords in your statements are "Over the last few months."

We all know 2012 YTD Audi's sales growth is stronger than BMW's.

We also know that BMW has used incentives to drive volume thereby hurting its profit margin:

"That led to a decrease in the margin to 9.6 percent from 11.9 percent a year earlier. Incentives burdened its return on sales by as much as 1.2 percentage points, CFO Eichiner said.

Volkswagen AG (VOW)’s Audi, the world’s second-largest luxury-car brand, reported a margin of 10.5 percent last quarter, outpacing the 6.4 percent at Mercedes."

...and the last few months are more recent than the past year right? Its a sign of things to come!

LOL OMG a .9 percent diff in profit margin!!! That is damn impressive for BMW considering they are independent....Poor Audi is just VW's puppet brand, built in the same factories as Seat, and VW's...are you really getting a premium car? Or just a car made by cutting corners?

GermanNutGermanNut - 12/3/2012 4:36:08 PM

The past few months is not indicative of a full year's performance to date. A full year's worth of performance to date shows Audi's sales growing much faster than BMW's both in the United States and globally.

A .9 percentage profit margin difference shows how BMW needs to use incentives to drive volume and is burdened with higher production costs than Audi.

Audi enjoys much better economies of scale and lower production costs than BMW due to its membership in the Volkswagan Auto Group.

Obviously with an Audi you are not getting a car made by cutting corners.

In fact, more people are switching to Audi from BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Lexus than ever before (just watch any Audi commercial on tv these days).

Audi is both the fastest growing luxury brand in the United States and in the world that is rapidly catching up to BMW in the sales race and is already more profitable than independent, high-cost burdened BMW.

The Audi didn't make the test because the S4 would wipe the floor with the over-priced, plasticky interior 335i. MotorTrend didn't want to ridicule BMW more than it already was in this article.

No, you won't. You work for Audi and as such you'll keep on posting one sided things to start flame wars and then you'll conveniently forget everything that doesn't go Audi's way (like the massive number of European comparisons where the 3-Series, 5-Series, M5, etc. have won).

They're both great brands. What I don't understand is how people like you don't see the negative impact your behavior has on the image of the brand they're being paid to hold so dear. When I first started reading this site it was Lexus trolls who acted like you. Now it's you and the Audi kids. And I don't get it -- diehard fanboys will love your act but they were already fanboys. Anyone who doesn't already agree with you is just going to read all the verbal diarrhea and either disregard it, or even worse, get turned off by it. You're literally accomplishing the opposite of what you're being paid to do.

And I don't know why I am bothering to engage since it won't make a bit of difference. Go, do your thing, make the public image of a good brand be that of a bunch of petty, petulant children. That worked sooooo well for Lexus.

@Cleveland, I dislike PQ40's pro-BMW schtick just as much as GermanNut's AudiUberAlles garbage. The only reason I called one out over the other is PQ40 didn't try to cozy up after like GermanNut did with this ironic "hey Kettle, this is Pot, you're black" statement:

"JRob, I refuse to get involved in PQ40's childish claims from now on. I will let Audi's sales numbers, awards, comparison test and financial results speak for me."

Had PQ done the same thing, I'd have hit him right back with the same thing. BMW HAS lost comparison tests in U.S. mags recently. Audi DOES make great cars. BMW IS making their cars softer, heavier, and more focused on tech and luxury than on what made them popular in the first place. Steering feel IS a problem, they need to stop using low rolling resistance runflat tires in their quest for the last half an mpg because it's messing with the braking and handling, their cars have too much bodyroll unless you opt for adjustable suspensions, the cars have gotten comparatively too expensive, etc. And I frankly HATE the way BMW and Benz are whoring out their products right now to win an imaginary sales crown. So believe me, I have no problem bashing BMW and BMW fanboys when the circumstances warrant it. The primary reason I end up defending BMW usually is because of people like GermanNut who only see one side. In that case SOMEONE has to see both.

As an owner of a 2007 335i coupe, I rented a new 328i for a week. What a disappointment. Going from hydraulic to electric steering is a disaster since there is no road feel anymore.

Also I can't stand the start/stop (even though it can be disabled...each time you get in the car)...and the build quality seems noticeably lower. The car just felt flimsy and cheaper compared to older BMWs. What a shame. Guess I will consider MB and Audi for my next vehicle.
