The speculation is that the EV tax credit will be increased from $7,500 to a $10,000 next year. That is the same amount as the Model S price increase.

Makes sense, but I still can't see how the base models are anything but loss leaders to market the 50-60k price, I think those models might disappear down the line.

They remain to be seen. Tesla does have orders for them and a 150 - 200 mile range is nothing to frown upon. No other EV currently gets such a range except Tesla's Roadster, Model S, and the RAV4 EV, which has a Tesla drivetrain and also costs $60k.

They might have orders but I don't see them wanting to even sell those models.

The base 40KWh and 60KWh cars are profitable as well. Right now they are making little margin on any of the batteries. As battery prices fall, the 85KWh battery will be more attractive profit-wise, but all the models are worthwhile to sell.
