New York City Faces Class Action Suit For Rigging Red Light Cameras

Now New York City is facing a class-action lawsuit. The city is accused of rigging the lights to catch more drivers and write more tickets.

They're so-called "gotcha" cameras, mounted at intersections. Their photos catch and help ticket drivers running red lights. New York City had them first in 1998.

Robert Sinclair, AAA motor club New York spokesperson said, "Red light cameras are to prevent the very dangerous, so called, T-Bone crashes, where you have the front of vehicle running into the side of another. We are in favor, in concept, of the red light cameras, but they have to be done to certain engineering criteria."

The city deserves to be sued for this.

Unfortunately, it seems the sole purpose of many politicians today is to find ways ways to extract money from the people they purport to represent. Somewhere along the line the polarity shifted and rather than gov't workers working on behalf of the people, the people now work on behalf of gov't workers—to pay for their bloated salaries, extended holidays, and generous pensions. Limiting the size and power of politicians is the only recourse.

My city has them, but they didn't alter the light timing to catch you. Infractions have dropped tremendously, as have accidents at these particular intersections. In my book they are doing exactly what was promised, reduced injuries and fewer red light runners.

In fact, infractions have dropped so much that the city no longer makes any money from them.
