So, The All-New BMW 4-Series Concept Debuts BUT 00R Has A Bone To Pick With Its Design
Today marked our first official look at the all-new BMW 4-Series Coupe Concept. Regardless of your brand favorites, this marks an important day simply because the 3-Series is largely considered the benchmark in the entry-level premium class.

Oh yeah, and it sells a ton of this product. Everyone in the automotive industry was looking at this launch today.

While the general consensus around here seems to be a bunch of high fiving and folks looking forward to seeing the production version, I am not jumping up and down. Sorry to be a "Debbie Downer," boys and girls but this isn't all that in my book.

For starters, I can't seem to figure out why the front and rear valence are essentially mirroring each other. Frankly, it just looks silly. What happened to that faux rear diffuser BMW typically outfits its sportier models with? At least that seems to take away visual heft.

Next up is that WRETCHED side vent. While BMW is linking its functionality to the Air Curtain, I have to say that I hope it provides significant benefits in terms of efficiency because it looks like a complete afterthought. If the savings aren't significant, frankly, I don't think this vent's addition is worth it. I guess it's sort of like that saying from supermodel Kate Moss: "Nothing tastes as good as skinny feels." In other words, I'd rather not gain a insignificant difference in efficiency for a tacked-on design element that really kills how clean the vehicle's side profile would have looked.

Lastly, I can't understand how BMW could show off what is easily one of the brand's most ill-conceived interiors. What is up with the cowboy-inspired inter-woven leather bits? Is this a horse saddle or an interior? On top of that is the contrasting stitch that adorns certain panels and the leather and it all leaves a bad taste in my mouth. On top of the criss-crossing lines the interior panels have, plus the contrasting stitch, plus the aluminum, wood, and two-tone color this is one of the busiest interiors on the planet. That's not a good thing.

While I know the production version will obviously be much more toned down, it's not like the standard 3-Series' interior is a work of art. It too is plagued with these downright confusing seams.

Though I can't be sure if I am alone on these critiques, I do have to say I think this is a far cry from the days of the 2003 E46 330Ci I use to drive. That was a vehicle with a teutonic look, a driver-focused, flowing interior and it oozed class.

This, on the other hand, just screams all of the things I wouldn't look for in an entry-level premium product whether it's a concept or production.

An excerpt from BMW's press release follows:

Craftsmanship, sustainability and technical refinement.
Developed by BMW Individual, the colour and materials design of the BMW Concept 4 Series Coupe is tailored precisely to the geometry of the interior. The two-tone Black and Schiaparelli Brown trim provides a particularly effective showcase for the interplay of forms in the front cabin, and light contrast stitching adds a fresh touch to the leather-covered surfaces. This exclusive trim consists of sustainably tanned leather, which makes a convincing case for itself with its natural feel and soft texture, as well as the environment-friendly tanning process used to produce it.

The fine detailing of the BMW Concept 4 Series Coupe exterior is continued inside the car, numerous elements of which reflect the exceptional attention to detail with which the BMW Concept 4 Series Coupe has been put together. As well as discreetly embossed “BMW Individual” lettering on the seats and door sill strips, the seats are also home to very special hand-braided leather trim elements, which run vertically down the seats and enhance the interior’s feeling of class. The likewise leather-covered cup holders also adopt the braiding theme, as do the floor mats.

A Natural Chestnut fine wood trim strip adds the finishing touch to the exclusive interior. The combination of carefully selected, high-grade materials, sophisticated details and the extensive use of handcraftsmanship fills the BMW Concept 4 Series Coupe with an ambience defined by contemporary luxury. The Liquid Metal Silver exterior colour developed exclusively for the concept car shows off its expressive exterior design to excellent effect and injects an extra dose of energy into the interplay of contours and surfaces.

Sorry, but we don't agree with Agent00R's design missives. The new concept's silhouette profile and overall proportions are both more pronounced and muscular than the current 3 series. As for the claim that the car is not teutonic-looking enough, just take a look at the interior: the material colours, especially for the wood and leather, combined with the 'basket-esque' woven textile detailing are all very Bavarian. (The interior also has a certain late 70's, early 80's retro feel to it which we really appreciated.)

No question its distinctive. Silhouette and crisp lines very nice. However side front fender vent and bellow the belt (bumber) front and rear are all ham fisted, heavy handed design ques. All could have been just as aggressive but more stylishly executed. For example the front fender vents could look less an after thought, have no chrome and added depth versus tacked on look.

I struggle with the 4-series designation. There is so much rich history and heritage with the M3, what will folks claim now, "Hey, come check out my new M4" there isn't much cache to that IMHO.

then get the M3 sedan. "Come check out my new M4" will have just as much meaning to a non-car person as "come check out my new M3 or C63 or RS5", which is to say "zero". To someone who knows about cars, it'll have just as much meaning. No one complains that Audi has an A4-based RS5 coupe and convertible, and for years no one complained that Mercedes sold AMG CLK/E-class coupes that were nothing but reskinned C-classes (a trend that, oddly, continues today). Point being, if you know cars you'll appreciate an M4 as a coupe M3. And if you don't know cars you won't know the difference, it'll just be a fast, good looking, and expensive BMW.

it will definitely suck when people ask what car i drive and i answer " M4" the m3 really has history behind it, now its all just an M gimmick..
if you guys only knew how people drive me crazy when they say " i saw a guy with an M7" people put M stickers on every bmw now..

as far as this design, i like it, however what is the point of the side vent on the standard 3 series, when the regular cars never had them and only the M's had them? what will be to differentiate it from the actual M ?

the best thing about this concept i think are those wheels !!

Hey Agent 00R:

I would like to know why my profile can not "rate" comments. I haven't been "naughty" for Chirstmas. I can post comments but can not rate them. Thanks

The side vents and bumper covers spoil what is a great profile. This is a bigger car, too. The '3' has grown so much over the years, it should be a '4', or something else. Sad that BMW has resorted to plastering all the trendy junk on the outside, but people who buy these things today will probably love it.
The interior? Are you kidding,BMW? Please be kidding.

I agree with 00R about the side vents. But that's about it on the rest of his critism. Lets take the side vent.I'm not sure why it is necessary. If BMW did away with the tacky chrome and continued with a slight indentation along the door and slightly into the rear fender
then at least it would be more feathered in.Otherwise it's not really necessary. As for the rest of the exterior let me say this. This is best BMW design for a coupe in a long time. I really like the sharp edge design of the BMW 3 series coupes from the mid 90's. Since then the designs have been bloated looking. What's interesting is that the original BMW 3.0 CS coupe from the early 70's was approximately 183 inches long. This car is roughly 182 1/2 iches long. I for one like the front and rear valance matching as it helps tie the front and back together better.I also think the side profile is beautiful(far better looking and resolved then the 6 series coupe-That car looks too long). This is a very balanced design as well as very elegant. Now to the interior.Oviously the leather cross stiching cupholders will go bye bye.
The interior is not exotic looking but rather straight forward and user friendly. It sort of like BMW is taking a page out of the Porsche's new 911/Boxster/Cayman.Ergonomically useful but not too flashy. I think it works fine. Now if BMW can really make this a driver's car without too many electronic doodads on it I might be tempted.

I'm not sure what 00R is looking at but this 4 series looks 100x's better than the 3 series. This look translates quite beautifully on this coupe body. The fender vents may be a bit much but I'll get over it. The interior is rather interesting too (minus the easter baskets for cup holders).

Well done, BMW!

Not a fan of side vents either (they make the car look like a Hyundai Tiburon from the side), and some of the interior bits are over the top (all the braided stuff, woven cupholders, etc.). But those interior bits are not going to make it to production, anyway, so there's no point in bitching about them. It's a concept, it's supposed to be like that. And as far as the interior being "busy" goes, with the mix of materials, I could not disagree more. I think it's visually exciting, and I for one am glad to see BMW putting some pizzazz into their interiors. When they don't, they end up with reviews chastising them for having interiors that are too dark, drab, spartan, "business-like", etc. Then they spice one up, and still people complain. What is it people want exactly? If that interior was on an Audi, I wonder what the reaction would be? I'd be willing to bet people would be fawning over the materials and style, and talking about how "Audi has done it again!" (before you flame, Google "Audi TT baseball glove interior", and understand that's actually a real, available interior)

Would I rather not have the side vent? Yes. Do I care about non-production concept car interior elements? No.

no, it has one continuous ridiculously thick row of stitching going all the way around the seats, plus just as much metal/plastic/black/brown/whatever as the BMW interior.

https://www.google.com/search?q=audi+tt+baseball+glove+interior&aq=f&oq=audi+tt+baseball+&aqs=chrome.0.59l2j57j61l2j60.2564&sugexp=chrome,mod=11&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8#hl=en&tbo=d&sclient=psy-ab&q=audi+tt+baseball+glove+interior+photo&oq=audi+tt+baseball+glove+interior+photo&gs_l=serp.3..33i21.7191.7992.0.9528.6.6.0.0.0.0.182.855.0j6.6.0.les%3B..0.0...1c.1.6S09XM6Rn3Y&pbx=1&bav=on.2,or.r_gc.r_pw.r_cp.r_qf.&fp=998a76417492f817&bpcl=39650382&biw=1280&bih=645

You really going to sit there and try to say if the interiors were reversed that you wouldn't be making fun of BMW for an ugly ass baseball glove interior while drooling about how awesome Audi and their braided interior is? Really? Because they're dead even in the busy/gaudy scale. And again, that's a production interior, this one isn't.

Yeah, it's a concept-only interior, probably, but still, what was their point? Test marketing to cowboys who also may be pimps?

looks great. From a distance, the muscularity looks very pronounced. What a commanding vehicle with a lot of presence. Who cares about the interior, at least they are showing different design concepts just to show creativity.
I personally really like the interior of the new 3 series. I do not like the Audi or MB.
Cant wait for the final rendition!

Other then smaller production wheels I'm pretty certain this is the 4 series. The interior will be slightly toned down as well. The body work is frozen for production. It is a very good looking car and both muscular yet elegant at the same time. To me it harks back to the early 70's 3.0 CS Coupe(virtually the same length) as well as the mid 80's 6 series coupe. This is by far the prettiest car BMW has in their lineup.I hope it drives as well as it looks.
