Fiat To Produce New Jeep Model And New 500X In Italy

Fiat said today it will begin building two new vehicles at its plant in Melfi, Italy, including a small Jeep that it will sell in the U.S.

The Italian automaker, which is Chrysler’s majority owner, said it expects production of the two vehicles to begin in 2014 after it invests 1 billion euros to prepare the plant.

“The first of the two new models will be a Jeep utility vehicle that represents the brand’s entrance into a new market segment,” Fiat said in a statement. “Melfi will be the only plant in the world to produce this model and, as for all Jeep products, it will be sold in markets worldwide.”

In addition to the new Jeep, Fiat said it also will also produce the new Fiat 500X at the plant in Melfi.

The model being produced in Italy will be a new model based. Romney's ad is still incorrect because the jobs can not be exported, if they were never in the U.S.

MrEE-You are misinformed. The majority of Jeep production is in the US and is expanding. This new platform (compact small wide) is a platform that is being shared with Fiats 500 L and 500 X.Fiat has sever plant utilization problems in Europe due to the slow economy in many countries. They have re-geared their auto production to be more export based. To help with plant utilization Fiat has decided to build some Chrysler models in Italy for export. There is plenty of business already for Chrysler in the US. Further Fiat has dramitically re-made Chrysler over the last 3 yrs. It now needs Chrysler's help and support.
