Infiniti Working On A GT-R Sport Sedan - Are The "Kings" Of The Class DOA?

Infiniti Working On A GT-R Sport Sedan - Are The
News is surfacing this week that Nissan's luxury brand, Infiniti is up to something. Something good.

No, it isn't the new nomenclature that folks are freaking out about -- really, it's not a big deal but these bored journos need something to bitch about.

Not only were we psyched to show you that rendering last night, we're also pumped up to tell you about some pretty incredible news. Infiniti is said to be planning a 550 horsepower, forced induction six-cylinder sport sedan. That sounds awfully similar to Nissan's world-famous GT-R powerplant.

Now when folks first heard about the Nissan GT-R they weren't impressed. Then we all saw the astonishing lap times. I am going to go on a limb here and say that essentially Infiniti is going to create a four-door GT-R.

That means it is likely one of the most violent, fastest and jaw-droppingly good sedans will be built.

This means that the former "Kings" of the sport sedan class are to be up against the stiffest competition yet. That would include the BMW M5, Mercedes-Benz E63/CLS63 AMG and Porsche Panamera Turbo S. If Nissan/Infiniti can do an encore of the GT-R with two more doors slapped on, everyone else is toast -- in my humble opinion.

What say you, Spies?

Are the sport sedan "Kings" DOA if Infiniti creates a four-door GT-R?

Infiniti is working on a new flagship model that will sit above today’s V8-powered M56 as part of what the firm describes as a “massive product offensive.”

The new car will be powered by a forced induction V6 producing in excess of 550bhp. The engine could be as small as three litres – Infiniti boss Johan de Nysschen, explaining the firm’s recent decision to change the way it badges its cars, said the car would have to be called M30 “following our current naming logic.” He described the new model as a “high-tech performance flagship.”

If it can do 90% of what the Nissan GT-R do in a straight line race and around the track, then it will become the new King in this class for sure.

But I only see one problem it will cost over $100k dollars for sure. Most cars in this class cost around $60,000-$70,000+. I can't not wait to see the spec when it come out.

My bad, I read the entire post. If it compete against the BMW M5, Mercedes-Benz E63/CLS63 AMG and Porsche Panamera Turbo S, then it should be able to price this Infiniti GT-R version for $100,000+ dollars with no problem.

Anyway, have a wonderful and safe holiday season everyone!!

I mean considering the stock 2013 Nissan GT-R does 0-60 in 2.7s and quarter mile in 10.8s and the 2014 Nissan GT-R does 0-62 in 2.7s-2.8s so I pretty sure it can do 0-60 in 2.5s now.

If this Infiniti Nissan GT-R version can make can do 0-60 in 2.9s-3.2s and quarter miles in 10.8-11.2s it will be absolutely madness performance. It will become the new King in this class for sure.

Will Infiniti continue to make great cars with bland styling?

I think with the new naming strategy and products we're beginning to see the effect of Johan de Nysschen's leadership. The naming is very much like Audi with their sedans all being designated A followed by a number and the Crossovers all being Q designations. I would hope that the de Nysschen also has some influence over design and styling as well.

I think we can expect more weight than the GT-R has, so slightly reduced performances figures. Also, I imagine they will drop the engine in the M platform and re-engineer/upgrade many of the components vs. "slapping 2 extra doors on the GT-R".

Either way, this is what we've all been waiting for and since Infiniti is finally ready to deliver, we should all expect a great product that was worth the wait. Infiniti "don't get no respect", resting quietly in the shadows of the "big 4" (MB, BMW, Audi, Lex) and this should hopefully change that for them.

Of course they'll have to re-engineer the entire product if they were to drop in the GT-R's motor (or some other variant).

And it is called a Bentley Type 'R'.

Price is going to be the biggest factor. Maybe Infiniti can loose one turbo or switch to a supercharged forced induction to cut back on costs so that it can compete with the M3 and RS5/S4.

If Nissan to bring it to market for under $65k, it would destroy.

p.s.

Of course this is assuming that they can tune the car to perform within 10%-15% of the GT-R.

If Infiniti is going to do a super luxury sedan it may be based on the GTR. However it will have a significant increase in wheelbase and weight.I don't think they are just going to do a 4dr GTR. If that were the case it woul still be smaller than a 3 series. So to compete in the luxury arena the wheelbase would have to go up about 8 or 9 inches at the minimum. the length would increase a minimum of a foot. You would be looking at a weight of well over 4000 LBS.A 4dr GTR would not really compete with Audi S 6, Panamera Turbo, BMW 550 ETC. for the simple reason it would be too small and not ride terribly well(a critisism of the current GTR).So in addition to the weigh an length gain your talking about retuning the shocks to offer a more acceptable ride.So wen you factor all these 3 changes you have a vehicle who'es performance is significantly blunted. Therefore I'm guessing it might be close to a Panamera turbo in performance.
