The Top 10 HOTTEST Sellers In 2012: Year-End Auto Sales Numbers Are In, HONDA Making Strides
One of my favorite things about AutoSpies.com is that Agent 009 is always publishing the auto sales reports fresh from the wires at the beginning of every month. He does a great job passing along that information so we can all analyze and digest the numbers.

But now it's the perfect time to take a step back and analyze the Top 10 sellers for 2012.

Generally speaking, the usual suspects made the list. The Ford F-Series, Chevrolet Silverado, Toyota Camry, et al.

BUT there's something VERY interesting going on in the Top 10 this year. Notice anything?

Honda has taken over THREE(!) spots, namely: four, five and nine. Even bigger news? Two of the three didn't hold a Top 10 spot last year. These two are coming off the bench Jeremy Lin style.

And the one vehicle -- the Accord -- that was on last year's list made a significant jump from ninth place to fourth. That's a significant move.

So, what's generating this improvement for Honda? While the Civic was largely criticized and a revamped 2013 has arrived, it seems to be moving tons of product off showroom floors. The Accord has been handsomely updated for 2013 as well and the CR-V is all-new.

Is Honda set up to dominate 2013 with these three new vehicles?

What say you, Spies?

I believe last year's sales figure for Honda and Toyota were primarily distorted by the earthquake (and Thailand flood) where it affected their supply, not because of their vehicle per se. The criticism of the 2012 Civic and the 2008-2011 Accord were entirely deserved but those vehicles were still good compared to their rivalries and customer loyalty will carry them for at least one weak generation. This transition year is just bringing Honda sales back to where they would normally be. Throw in the immediate corrective action taken on the 2013 Civic and Accord and 2013 results should not be a surprise to anyone, EXCEPT FOR 009 AND HIS HYUNDAI HERD.

No surprises here, cars for the masses. The Camry is killing the Accord.

Though it still is off by 70k units, the 2013 is a much better product from what I've seen.

I wager the 2013 Accord will tighten the gap. Not sure if it will close it.

Should be a fun race to watch.

Nobody at autospies wants to be bothered by facts being introduced in the comments section....so feel free to spew falsehoods without having to back them up to a link to an outside source. Good job.

Mary, you are indeed very ignorant. If you think the Camry is unsafe, why does it have more airbags than the Accord???? Why don't you research your facts before you make idiotic comments like that? If you would buy an Accord because of that test, I do not even feel sorry for you or the ignorance you are full of.

The Camry will embarrass and humiliate the Accord in sales, quality and reliability yet another year...

The Camry may still beat the Accord, but the race will be much tighter. Last month showed the Camry outsold the Accord by only about 2000 units. This trend was consistent for the last few months of the years when Honda finally achieved fully recovery from the tsunami-related interruptions and the new Accord was introduced. Remember, after the first quarter and a half of this year, the Altima was besting the Accords' sales numbers. Let's also not forget that the Accord should also have a new, very viable Hybrid option for buyers, which they did not have for the last 4 years.

@00R, I did not realize you couldn't post links in comments. I'm just curious because I submitted a story wth the "Big Red Button" about The Accord winning a recent comparison, and it was never published here.

That's funny, I've experienced the same thing. Maybe the agents tend to be very busy when they don't really care or disagree with the stories that DO come in?

I responded to the agents questions on a thread not to long ago to prove a point (correctly and without a response I might add) by using links and quotes and crediting the source yet I heard nothing from them after the initial juvenile response and certainly nothing about sharing links.

I guess I slipped through the cracks...

You guys have to get over yourselves.

If the content isn't one sentence -- should be approximately a paragraph -- and it has a good picture, it'll make the cut.

And there are some stories we deny. No, we don't accept everything submitted.

As noted above, Honda doesn't have the capacity to build more Accords. Camry's are much more popular with rental companies and fleet buyers. The Camry is a softer, more quiet car with wet noodle steering which is loved by it's buyers, who are older twits who don't care about handling. They interpret effortless steering with zero feel to be the best. Crash safety IS a concern to most of us, and the Accord smokes the Camry in offset head-on crashes, a popular scenario.
The Accord is more space efficient and, in my experience, exceeds Honda's mileage claims. The resale value is superior. Model for model, Honda has loaded the Accord('13 Civic, too)with more standard features and value vs. the competition. This is a tradition for them, but even more so currently since they are trying to regain lost credibility.
I have never, nor will I ever, make a purchase decision based on sales of a given product.
The 2013 Accord is continually bashed on this site. I don't understand that. Most of the haters have probably not even driven the thing. The automotive press has unanimously heaped the highest of praises on it, comparing it to luxury cars costing much more. Because of that, the more I read about it here, the more stupid you(haters)sound.
The new Accord is an accomplishment. I am not saying that all the cars it competes with are losers either. It is fortunate for all who are shopping in the class are offered such great choices. Industry news is a great source for information prior to going out to shop for a new car. I've trusted it for almost 30 years now. Instead of test driving a dozen different possibilities, you can have it narrowed down to a few. The opinions expressed on autospies are so irrelevant and biased that no one could ever seriously take them into consideration since there are too many who just want to post in favor of the brand in their driveway. I mean that "just HAS TO BE THE BEST because I bought the stupid thing".
So forgive me, but I think I'll continue to listen to critics who test cars for their living(yeah, I know. Honda bought them off)rather than those of you who are spewing fiction bullshit.
Honda has responded to criticism of it's cars in a way no other manufacturer has ever responded--remarkable and prompt. And remember the main criticism has not been that the product wasn't as good as other manufacturers; it's because it wasn't Honda-like !! They had set the benchmark, after all.

To Irishmike, I think the main reason the previous Accord was bashed here was for its styling. No one really criticized the driving experience. You have to admit that the previous Accord's styling was incoherent, dowdy, and outright not attractive. Especially when compared directly with the styling of the Sonata and Optima. Hondas and especially Accords have always been known for conservative and relatively boring styling, but that last attempt really was pretty bad. Thank goodness they made the appropriate adjustments on the new model, though it's still a bit on the bland side.

My God, over a million unnecessary hillbilly trucks. Did they all come with free assault rifles?

Have to think a good portion of those "hillbilly" trucks were purchased by companies and government entities. I have a better impression of trucks today than i did a few year ago. With fuel mileage getting better, 4 doors and a usable backseat, I see how it can be a good family vehicle. Similar fuel mileage as an AWD minivan packed to the max but more utility. Also, the way I drive my 535, i'm not doing much better (probably worse) on the fuel side. At least it's not the beefed up oversive SUVs that served no purpose besides having a rap star sized interior, lots of plastic, poor visibility, and poor fuel mileage. Truck tech has changed a lot in the last 5 years. Went to lunch with a client in a new Ram not too long ago and it was as nice as any vehicle I've ever been in. It was a big vehicle but it wasn't akward or hillbilly by any means.

yeah, all those hillbilly trucks are sticking out of parking spaces and making old people panic swerve 10 ft away from them for fearing of hitting the tailgate.

Sounds to me like the problem is old people panicking. Most of the buicks and cadillacs they are driving are nearly as long.
