Audi R8 to be the car that revolutionizes Audi's image in the U.S?

With much talk of the upcoming Audi R8, many wonder if this will be the car that will revolutionize Audi's image into a brand equally respected with BMW & Mercedes-Benz in the United States.

The figures from the rest of the world speak for themselves and Audi is as Tier I as they come for a premium luxury automaker.

With the R8 making its debut with a 425 horsepower V* and then a V-10 after that we can expect some world-class performance.

The Audi R8 will outaccelerate cars like the Porsche 911 (the V10 R8 will be the one to compete with the 911 Turbo), BMW M6, Aston Martin DB8, Mercedes SL55 AMG.

The V10 will essentially place the R8 as a direct competitor to its Lamborghini Gallardo cousin.

If there is any car that can change Audi's image in the U.S. it's the R8.

What can we expect?

Actually, I don't think in the R8 will compete with the Gallardo. Personally, I think lambo is going to make a new model or refresh the Gallardo and add more hp and lower the weight.

As for the R8 changing Audi's image... definately. I always thought Audi was way underrated, they really are amazing cars. BMW nor MB have a mid-engined supercar. This is going to be cool.

german nut: Will outaccelerate 911 turbo?

You shouldn't make a bold statement like this until test are completed and numbers in.

they have not anounced a v10 YET but it will follow
the sub 80k 420 lite mid engine car will be nice.

it is more of a 911 comp.

The v10 would be a turbo comp. and be a nice mid engine car It sure solved understeer when you have the engine behind your butt

Don't get jealous. Audi group is owning. Lambo sales are up 50%, the Phaeton factory is probably the finest in the world, the chassis is also amazing.

why would you say the phaetons platform is crap? what's crap about it?

funny how 911 Turbo does 0-60 (which is not all there is to acceleration) in 3.4 conservative, and 3.2 est... come on guys... it does 200 kph in the low 10s... come one guys...

I love the R8, but its not out accelerating the 997 Turbo... It'll be fast, but not a turbo

The 911 turbo does it in 3.4 seconds. The V10 R8 will withing a couple of tenths of that. The V8 will be quicker than the 911 S/4s and could match the GT3.

efox34, the phaeton does not underpin the a8. a8 has the aluminium space-frame.
and maybach? pshaw. a maybach is a perfect example of how money doesn't buy taste or class.

efoxS4,
The NSX was not another mere sporty coupe. It was and is one of the finest true all aluminum hand made exotics ever made.

Of course the Bentley Flying Spur is a competitor to the Rolls Phantom and Maybach. It costs $165K while its competitors cost over $300K. Roughly the same price range (the Rolls and Maybach are only double)

Of course $165K cars are priced to move, the whole world can go out and buy one.

To say that Bentley is plagued by plebian thinking is a clear sign of a lack of automotive knowledge.

Flying Spur is not a competitor to the Phantom and Maybach... the Arnage is...

logical, is it hard having to keep your mouth open while all that crap comes out?
a bentley is a completly different proposition to a rolls or a maybach. aside from costing far less, you don't drive a rolls or maybach, you get driven. you drive a bentley. and the arnage is a way better car than the maybach.
plebain roots? do you have blue blood or something? and if you're american there is no way you can be an aristocrat, so plebian sounds like it would be a very good word to describe you.
marginal company? 5th biggest in the world? and volkswagen was invented by dr ferdinand porsche, who invented (suprisingly) the porsche.
the 7 series is owned by the a8, not the other way around.
compromised cars? how? the fastest production 4 door saloon in the world sounds pretty good to me, as does the fastest 4 seater in the world.
arnage platform has aged fast has it? in what, 9 years? not that fast. and it's still selling. and your beloved rolls royce and maybach both use stretched chassis of bmw 7er and merc s class, and engines from both models. bentley uses its own twin turbo 6.75 litre v8 in the arnage and azure, and a twin turbo 6.0 w12 in the continental gt/flying spur.
logical, have you ever owned, driven or even been in a bentley, rolls or maybach? can you drive? do you leave your house, ever?
and maybach sold fewer than 10 maybachs in britain in its first year, rolls-royce the same.
bentleys don't compete with rolls-royces. they are not supposed to, they do not intend to.
a 0-62 in 4.7 secs 200mph bentley is not going to appeal to someone who needs a new taxi or bus (for that is what the maybach and rolls are)
and what is so great about a "pure" platform, other than cost?
your beloved mercedes shares as many platforms as it can(ml/gl/r, cls/e, clk/c, s/cl/maybach, a/b)
when this run of maybach ends, maybach will be retired very quickly, since it has made little if any money.
new offerings? continetal gtc? azure? if those aren't new i don't know what is.
and the maybach 51 is trying to take the flying spur's market place, so if that doesn't prove bentley's success, i suppose the fact that the maybach is simply a horrible car (a good bus though) does.
