In-Car Tech - What Do YOU Want To See In The Next FIVE Years?
Though we're preparing for the 2013 Detroit Auto Show, there's a great show going on this week in Las Vegas, the Consumer Electronics Show (CES). And while you may retort that it's a technology show, you're right. But the keen observers would have noted that in recent years, automakers have been increasing their appearance.

If I recall correctly, last year Audi and Ford made a pretty significant apperance and as I type this I know for a fact Ford held a press conference earlier today for some new in-car technology.

This, of course, got me thinking.

What technology do YOU want to see in the next five years in your car?

A couple of examples I can foresee and have been discussed in recent months:

- An interactive windshield. THINK: A massive head's up display (HUD) that can display opaque information.

- Predictive directions that take into account the traffic flow, fuel efficiency, time and offers shortcuts.

- A mobile device that can run your car's infotainment system and also be unplugged for your on-the-go travel

- A voice command system that actually works. Imagine Apple's Siri controlling way MORE functions of your automobile.

If it has AC and a radio, I am a happy camper.

You're my kind of guy.

Definitely too much tech in cars these days but the overwhelming majority seems to appreciate it.

Expect more.

I want a multi camera dvr setup using on board bumper and mirror cams that allow me to have my own GoPro like setup that also can send the photo/vid to social net or 911 services say if i see a crime in progress etc.

So i could click a button on steering wheel shoot a pic with gps coordinates on it right to 911 operator.

Or send realtime shots of actual traffic around town to other drivers so they can avoid...so many uses

I'd be happy just to see what we have now, but done WELL! World class nav systems, like Garmin's, rather than the over-priced outdated junk auto-makers sell today. Great user-interfaces on screen-based systems instead of what we have today (designed by programmers who've never been exposed to humans who actually try to use the stuff). And controls that are designed for usability, rather than fewer controls (3 menus deep and 5 clicks to access the Bass control for your radio...that's just nuts).

Auto-makers have gone too far in the way of more bullets on a feature list, rather than outstanding execution of an idea.

Somthing that is non touch screen and does not take away your attention from the road you are driving on.Unfortunately as automakers try and one up themselves trying to get the latest and greatest tech out there the continually ignore a basic problem. That is simply that the more the tech the more peoples attention is off the road and off driving. This things in my opinion are not safe except in an autonomous car. However, when you actually have to pay attention to the road these built in tech toys seem to command more and more of the people's attention span.

Less is more....all new tech should be non-driver interfaced, it does its thing without any input from driver who can concentrate on driving.

I like High tech but Honestly ...if it is not Japanese , most likely we will spend a lot of time and money with cool stuff the does not work..and stupid users demanding the manufacturers cause the cruise control and the radar did not stop the car...or the lane keeping assistant did not advise them of the incoming car...and the list goes on....

We need more global vehicles built in the US, not just N.A.

Would be nice if vehicle prices started to decrease as well. And new vehicle models get smaller, not constantly larger - stop making current cars bigger to add new small cars.

1) Better smartphone integration. All I need is bluetooth streaming, steering wheel button to activate Siri or whatever voice command system is built into the phone, and would be nice if some apps from the phone were mirrored on a touch screen or head up display--> Nav/Maps, Traffic cameral and radar trap locator, album cover art, video while car is parked. Why is is necessary to duplicate all this stuff in the head unit design of every car when it already exists in most smartphones? In my 2009 E90 335i I have a few cool features that are nice to have. One is the ability to open Google maps on a computer, to choose a location and then send the details, including GPS info and phone/name (if a business) to the car. You can then open the message and have the car navigate to the location or call the number. If I hold the home button on my iPhone down to activate Siri, I can talk to her(it) via bluetooth, but there is no button anywhere on the car to activate it. My 2009 also has an iPod 30pin connector in the arm rest compartment and I can control the music through iDrive, but I don't have bluetooth streaming.

2) Mobile Wifi Access point built in and linked by 4G/LTE to phone carrier. Reasonable monthly access.
