Trading One For The Other? Reliability Is Getting Better, But Feds Confirm Recalls Are Rising
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration confirmed Thursday that vehicle recalls in 2012 rose by 4.5 percent to 16.2 million.

In total, automakers and other vehicle manufacturers issued 586 recall campaigns, down from 596 in 2011. Some 15.5 million vehicles were recalled in 2011, NHTSA said.

The Detroit News first reported the yearly recall tally, based on a review of all recall campaigns.

Toyota Motor Corp. led all automakers with 5.3 million vehicles recalled. It topped the list for the third time in four years.

So a recall for bad brakes due to defective hoses isn't reliability?

You have to remember JD Power considers a defect an item that doesn't work as expected (regardless if nothing is wrong with it). I would think bad brakes, airbags, fire hazards are all "defects" by that definition.

The overall gist of JD Power VDS is (or was) really:

What are you chances of having an issue that requires a visit to the dealer?

Again a recall is a visit to the dealer.

Dude, get your head out of your behind. There are all kinds of recalls but most tend to be due to safety. Any major defective issue with a car is a recall therefore a defect. This is why they must be reported a a recall by law and fix it at the companies expense.

If that label warrants a recall it is a defect. Heck I can get pissed at the way the infotainment screens are confusing and call that a defect.

Just check the latest Honda recall on airbags. Is this the "label" you are talking about or something that might kill someone?

Excellent example of how a recall in reality is a manufacturing "issue" and should be counted in an overall score.
