DETROIT AUTO SHOW: Will An Eye Popping Sticker Price Lead You To, Or Away From An ELR?
The most common question on the lips of onlookers who saw Cadillac unveil its flashy and fuel-sipping ELR plug-in hybrid at the auto show was: "How much?"

It's too early for General Motors execs to discuss price. The coupe won't hit showrooms for about a year. But the guessing has begun.

I've heard estimates anywhere from the low $50,000s to north of $70,000.

How could the spread be that big? Because GM could look at the decision in two very different ways:

Having a Volt it is hard for me to say that I want this car. Yes, the exterior looks very appealing, the interior is nice if not a bit for older folks, the all-electric range will be a bit lower than the Volt, the power output will be a bit higher.
The torsion beam rear suspension also remains, albeit with driver-adjustable shocks.

It is very disappointing that GM left the 1.4L cast-iron block normally aspirated engine in it, which was considered an afterthought even over three years ago during the design of the Volt. Instead the expectation was for the aluminum block Ecotec Gen.3 2.0L turbo engine from the 2013 ATS. Maybe it doesn't fit in with the Voltec drivetrain.

It is also disappointing that they did not use this opportunity to evolve the Voltec drivetrain. It has the same battery size, the same 3.3 kW charger, the same or slightly tweaked electric motors/generators as the Volt.

So if the price is significantly higher than that of the Volt from a practical perspective it is not worth it. From a luxury and extravagance perspective, maybe it is. But if the ELR is closer to $80k then one may consider the Fisker Karma or make the leap and get the Tesla Model S.

BS. I don’t know what a “regular” bankruptcy is, but if GM went under, literally the ENTIRE American auto industry wouldn’t be that far behind.

Stop whining about what clearly benefits the United States (and believe it or not, you).

It looks good. I think the the petrol motor in it should have had more pep. Maybe the 2.0T from the ATS. That way you can have the fuel efficiency when driving around on a daily basis (running on electric), but if you really put your foot down it will have some "ooommph" to go along with the sexy looks.

This is a great looking car. A little more performance would have been great. 0-60 in 7 sec or less would have been great. None the less, good job Cadillac.
