2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee Gets Diesel Power and Eight-Speed Transmission
The big news from the Jeep booth at this year’s North American International Auto show is the 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee. Jeep’s hot-seller gets a thorough mid-cycle refresh for the 2014 model year with a new 3.0-liter turbodiesel V-6, an eight-speed automatic transmission, revised front and rear fascias, and an updated interior. The 2014 Grand Cherokee SRT8 isn’t left out of the fun either, with an eight-speed automatic of its own and a new launch control system...

The 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee gets an available 3.0-liter turbodiesel V-6 produced by VM Motori (co-owned by Fiat and GM). The engine will produce 240 hp, 420 lb-ft or torque, while achieving 30 mpg highway (good for a 720-mile range). The new diesel, rated to tow 7400 pounds, uses urea after-treatment and a diesel particulate filter to meet emissions standards. It’ll go on sale in March in Summit and Overland trims.

Diesel good, new front end no.

Probably could get by on a 4 cylinder diesel but 6 is definitely better than a V8 gasoline engine.

It probably could, larger cars make due with a 4 but they chose the 6 because the automakers are trying to shed the rough and dirty reputation that diesels have in the US and because a V6 is smoother than an I-4. Plus since this car was designed with Americans in mind, power was an important factor.

If anyone has driven the new "clean" TDI V-6 (turbo)diesels from Mercedes, BMW and Audi/VW they will know this new Jeep is in the same class and isn't your father's smelly noisy "truck" engine but a modern smooth running powerplant with monster torque. It will be almost as strong and fast as the current 5.7L HEMI as long as they get the gearing and shift points correct on the transmission like Audi, Mercedes, BMW and VW has done.

Looks like they shrunk the headlights from a 300 and put them on. I don't like this new front end at all. I is so out of proportion with the rest of the vehicle.
