Are You Loyal To A Car Brand Or Always Playing The Field?

John Kwiecien, 47, is a commercial photographer who reckons he has owned vehicles from about 10 different brands since he started driving.

"I don't want to put myself in a box," says Mr. Kwiecien, who lives in suburban Detroit. He chooses cars that fit his lifestyle at a given time. Right now, he's driving a Volkswagen GTI, but he and companion Camille Milroy spent part of last Sunday touring the Detroit auto show with an eye on a Jeep Wrangler Unlimited to take on outdoor adventures with their two "big, hyper dogs."

If Mr. Kwiecien is the epitome of the automotive brand-hopper, Susan Imbrunnone, 49, also from the metro Detroit area, is a classic loyalist. She says she's on her fifth Honda Civic and isn't looking to switch. "I don't have any trouble," she says. "They're reliable and they're good on gas."

No brand loyalty here. I simply observe what I view to be the best product for the money. Though I must say I have a soft spot for Honda. That said, Honda is on top of its game and turns out high quality products. If that were to change, I wouldn't stand by them.

Stick to Japanese cars JapanEngineeringNo1...bought a new 2010 Shelby Mustang GT500 (then one of my dream cars) and rear end broke four times, was totally replaced once and caused me to be towed. Once after being in the Ford service department for two weeks to be "fixed" the rear end started making a loud clanking noise within two miles of leaving the dealership. I turned around and left it at the dealer where it remained for 30 days before being returned to me. In the first 18,000 miles and 18 months the car was in for repairs 77 days or two and a half months in total !!!! Be careful what you wish for and remember the prayer "Lord protect me from what I want."
