Six Reasons Why The Mercedes-Benz S-Class Will Continue To Be The Undisputed Benchmark For The Class

The all-new Mercedes S-class arrives in June 2013. These new spy shots give the clearest indication yet of the big Benz's styling, including the undisguised shape of the front grille, clearly inspired by the 2008 F700 concept car’s.

It's what's under the body that's always put the S-class at the top of the limo tree though, and the new car is set to maintain that standard. Here's CAR's definitive round-up of the six S-class breakthroughs you can expect this summer.

I doubt it. BMW, Audi, and even Cadillac have a better model that doesn't look like my grandfather's old car.

LOL. The fact that you mentioned Cadillac just destroys any ounce of credibility you may have tried to have.

What's the hype all about? Nothing here is specific to the S class or to Mercedes.

Hmm, the last two people who posted seem rather uninformed. The s-class to many has been considered the best car in the world. After all it is basically the car that many look at to see what technology will be introduced to cars in the future. Let's see the w221 model has been around since 06 and still every car in it's class has been redesigned after, less expensive than the s but still has trouble moving the volume the S-class moves. You posted that the car looks like your grandfathers car, which is exactly the point, you grandfather is probably the only person in your family who can afford this type of car which is the reason mercedes specifically gears the S-class towards that crowd. Im 27, I've aspired to own an S-class since childhood. Give me the pop pop car anyday.

merc07 - you're spot on. The S-class has that strange stranglehold on the 55 - 65 yr demographic and the CEOs, political leader/tyrant/dictator demographic and leave the VPs to their BMWs and Audis. It's not that the S is "better" than the 7 or the A8 per se, it's just that the S is the "best" in the mind of those that can afford them. They don't stray too far from their S, nor do the fans of the 7 and the A8 from their respective car. The more interesting issue is how these cars help MB, BMW and Audi market their lower level cars.

So much laughable hyperbole in just the first couple sentences. The s is at the "top of the limo tree" the same reason the camry is the top seller in sedans--hype and a following of idiotic lemmings that simply want a benz. There is nothing special about the s, under or on its skin; ugly outside, disastrous inside, (with the old v8), sluggish, handles like a german cadillac.....sorry, not seeing anything "class-leading" here.

No matter, though; plenty of rappers and athletes out there that dont care and only want something that costs a lot and has a star on the hood.

tattedtwice- The Mercedes s-class is the bechmark in the large lux class, it doesn't matter if you want to accept it or not... Fact is BMW, AUDI, LEXUS, and JAGUAR all know it. Based on your feeble knowledge of what attributes a large luxury saloon should posess, I think it's safe to say any car in this class wouldn't be for you. Stick you your sooped up Lancer with world class everything.

And to answer you question, the camry is the benchmark not because of sheeple who can't think for themselves, but like me I purchased a camry in 2005 with 11 miles new off the lot. I still have the car to this day with 150,000 miles. Fully paid off, in the 8 years I've owned the car the only thing that I've purchased is a new battery. Everyting else works like new. Cheap reliable college car, will last me well into my 30's. Great buy.

The S8 was introduced in 2012. The current s-class has been around since 06 without any major changes. If the s8 couldn't beat the 6 year old s-class that would be sad. Problem is audi just introduced the A8/S8 and mercedes is introducing a new s-class within a year. The old s-class cost more and sold more. The next s-63 will have all wheel drive along with a better more reliable engine made by AMG. As well all know AMG now will incorporate awd in their s,e,cls 63 models. Audi was never really able to compete with mercedes in the upper luxury market.

Different strokes for different fokes. Fact remins when you look at the full size luxry car market, the S-class according to those who know the car industry realize the S-class is the standard, the benchmark. Does that mean that the A8 or S8 isn't a good car no. But it's still not considered the benchmark. The reason I mentioned sells is because the S-class is the most expensive but best selling car in it's class. The S8 brand new is 10's of throusands cheaper but more peoply bypass the S8 and pay more for the inferior s63 as you put it.

S is the benchmark.
Always has been.
The people with unlimited means buy the S.

The only reason why it will be the 'benchmark' is because people have the habit of thinking MB are the best. Actually, since about 15 years ago, when the styling was reduced to Korean proportions and the proud badge was removed from the crippled little radiator grille and placed around the base of the bonnet mascot, these cars have been built to a price point and have lost all exclusivity they once most certainly had. They are now fashion victim cars, with little or no real soul.

Actually a soulless unpleasant car, the interior is plain ugly, the steering wheel with its plastic looking wood a total disaster. They have lost the plot to VAG for interiors. Look at the door cards- what a mess! They must feel that by returning to 'commanding' looking grilles, and putting the badge back on the front since 2 models, they have also returned to the good old days when a Merc was half hand-built.
