Judgment Day For Tesla's Model S FINALLY Comes
If there's one vehicle we're excited to hear more about, it's the Tesla Model S. While we're not drinking the Kool-Aid that everyone else seems to be enjoying, we're certainly intrigued by the prospect of a full electric vehicle that can deliver.

The problem with the Tesla Model S is that no one has really had the chance to properly test the vehicle. One publication got their hands on one because one of the head honchos snapped one up. Obviously their time was limited with it.

But thanks to Consumer Reports, who is world renowned for its journalistic integrity, we're finally going to find out the real deal at the end of the day. While they may not share the views of every bleeding heart enthusiast, we do know one thing after all these years — it typically looks out for the average American consumer.

I wouldn't define that person as a car lover or hater; however, I would say that person needs a vehicle to get from point "A" to "B," will have a cup holder or two, and will ultimately be reliable.

And because Consumer Reports shelled out its own money for this test as they do others, this isn't a special press fleet vehicle. This is what any buyer would get.

Needless to say, we're extremely excited to see how it performs.

Will it shoot the lights out or be a flop? What say you, Spies? Place your bets!

...The car starts at $57,400 with the base 40 kWh battery. Each battery step-up (to 60 and 85 kWh) is a $10,000 option so with the battery we chose it's a $20,000 upgrade. Other options add up quickly, so with the tan Nappa leather, large sunroof, and air suspension (which is on all early builds) our total sticker price came to $89,650. Electric cars are more expensive than comparable conventional cars, but the Model S would be most naturally compared to an Audi A7 or Porsche Panamera, which can get to that price level...

Considering how it has performed with hundreds of other reviewers, I'm pretty optimistic.

You didn't really read, did you?

Yes. It performed well on their 15-minute drives.

We want a long-term, fully independent test to verify these brief drives.

Agent00R, did you read the article? Because it is not stating anything negative. So what is your point? And Beside Motor Trend took the tesla on a 3 hour drive to Las Vegas. So, what are you talking about? Just face it, the electric car is here to stay if done right.

Three hours is not a suitable test for ANY product, specifically new tech.

Back off the Kool-Aid boys.

Look, I'm not Jim Jonesing over here. So, what is your gripe about the electric car? I mean of course the gasoline have its competitive advantages over the electric car when it comes to long range, but as time progress then most likely it will be trump by the electric car. I get get a solar power panel and I literately don't have to pay anything.

Sat in one at the NAIAS, going through menus just to do things like lower the sunroof is cool but annoying if you where driving.

I was surprised to see one on the road yesterday, just for a second. It was white and absolutely stunning (only saw the front). Clean, slick design I find very refreshing. For some reason it made me think of an Audi but 10 years into the future. Probably the white color had a bit to do with that.

Looking foward to seeing the full report from Consumer Reports. I expect the Tesla to perform well in their tests. Definitely the best looking - sexed up electric on the market.

I find it hilarious that the Agents and their followers look for input from Consumer Reports from all places to determine if a model is good. It is not surprising considering the highly exaggerated self image of integrity and importance from both "publications" :p

I find it hilarious that you've got a picture of a Volt as your avatar.

That car's done great business for GM ;)

It is not any Volt, it is my Volt, and it is aptly named... Avatar!

The Volt is the best-selling plug-in so GM did do something right. Alas they could do much more, especially now with more serious competition coming to play. If Tesla sustains their momentum, gathers enough cash to expand production at the Numi plant, and start building other models the Agents will sing a different tune.

As a Tesla Sig owner for the last three months (about 2500 miles driven), I can tell you that to date, the car is one of the best I've driven and gives up almost nothing vs the Mercedes that I had for many years. The ride is a little more BMW than Mercedes (more road feel) but is very comfortable, the touch screen is totally intuitive and easy to use, and the minor negatives to date have been totally within the expectations of this early adopter. It really is something quite different and a pleasure to drive (and boy is the performance model quick if you want it to be!). As far as I'm concerned, for the price, it's worth every penny. 3 months and still smiling!

Elon Musk, the Tesla creator and owner of SpaceX, went into this knowing he wasn't building another neighborhood golf cart to qualify for federal tax credits. He started out building his version of a BMW M5, but without being saddled with traditional restraints. He got the envious position of getting to design from a block of clay with having to allow for a transmission hump, a firewall, or worrying how and where the exhaust would route. He designed his M5 with the interior he new this segment would appreciate, while having the dynamic performance they expect. How at the end of the day he got so many things so right, AND a near 300 miles of range, is simply amazing. The car is worth every penny of what he's asking.

I haven't subjected my Model S P to the welcome testing CS will do, but so far, after admittedly only 520 miles of driving by someone who is not a car fanatic, I have become a car fanatic. Amazing performance! still getting used to not going to gas stations and simply plugging in at night to my outlet, which gets most of its energy from solar; and beautiful styling: of the 100 or so times I've driven it, at least 20 of them, on the road or in a parking lot, have asked me, childlike wonder in their eyes, "What kind of car is that?"

I'm looking forward to CS hopefully validating my so-far perfect experiences with a model that, as many of those who asked me to see the car have said, redefines what a car is and what our future can be.

I'm still getting used to grammar, apparently. Meant to write "...or in a parking lot, someone has asked me...."
