CAR WARS? How Many People Shopping For A Porsche 911 Actually Wind Up Going Home With A Panamera?

CAR WARS? How Many People Shopping For A Porsche 911 Actually Wind Up Going Home With A Panamera?
So, let's just get right to the chase.

Agent 001 and I were chatting today about our respective weekends and he noted he had been at his local Porsche dealer last night. 001 was comparing the prices of the all-new 911 (991) — my number one pick for 2012 — and the Panamera.

His point is a simple one: How can a Carrera S cost $125,000 and a Panamera S go for $105,000?

Of course there are plenty of reasons why from a branding and marketing perspective, but I'd say the primary is the following: The 911 is the halo car, which is the foundation of a brand steeped in rich tradition. One could argue that what makes a Porsche is fully enveloped in the 911 and you will find little tastes of it in the Boxster/Cayman, Cayenne and Panamera.

But 001 had a very interesting counterattack. If you pick up a Panamera S, you get SO much more car. More room, a proper backseat, more storage, more luxury, and a quieter AND more comfortable ride.

Keep in mind, most buyers aren't buying their 911s to go to the track and the same goes for Panamera owners. These are daily drivers meant to give buyers a thrill on the ride home from the office.

This back and forth triggered an intriguing question: Taking all of these things into consideration, how many people do YOU think go into a Porsche dealership looking at the very lovable 911 and wind up leaving with the keys to the more practical and livable Panamera?

I went shopping for a 911 and came home in a 911 last week. I did test drive both but the Panamera just didn't have the feel that i liked in the 911.

Don't let the door hit you on the way out.

Silly topic, how do you compare a lighter coupe with a flat-6 with a 4 door sedan with a V8? Sorry, I don't see the jump in logic from desiring a sports car (appearance, feel, image) to suddenly wanting a sporty family sedan.

I don't think it's silly at all.

The Auto Spies reader is someone who has owned MANY cars.

I've owned 10 911's so far and actually I'm kind of bored.

So I may actually get a Panamera if the numbers are great.

This is NOT the site where people get ONE great car in their lifetime.

Auto Spies readers are FICKLE and get bored easily.

I know because I'm one of them.

And regarding the new 911..it's AMAZING.

But is it worth 50k over a used 2009 or newer?

Not to me.

And I venture to guess, not to many when they do the math.

Agent 001 - I've owned 15 911's and was also bored. After one year and 8K miles on a R8 V10 spyder with manual trans, the thrills have not gone away.

And the other question is HOW did a 911 go from about mid 80's to a buck 30 so quickly?

options. can't get away with less than 30k in options. and that's if you're careful.

I'd guess we're gonna be seeing $200K 991 turbo S cabs

How can a Carrera S cost $125,000 and a Panamera S go for $105,000?

really simple. the 911 was loaded with options and the panamera wasn't. people are not seriously cross-shopping these two very different--but equally impressive--cars.

The only guys who go to a Porsche dealer to buy a 911 and come out with a Panamera either made the mistake of taking their wife with them or is a poseur more concerned about the brand image than the performance. If you go into a Porsche dealer to buy a Panamera by all means buy one. But if you go into a Porsche dealer to buy a 911 leave the wife behind and take your son, father or best bud.

Then Panamera is hold the title for most overrated and over priced car on the market (yes I driven several). The steering is as vauge as an F10 BMW. The interior looks as if it were designed by Buick, and drive 30k less than it cost. If this didn't have a Porsche crest on it everybody would scream Aztek.
Starting out a 90+ but once optioned out its about 120k. This car is all about the logo and nothing else.

Can you say M5 for the same money.

as far as panamera vs 911, i cant imagine someone cross shopping the two. i can imagine somone going in for a panamera and coming out with the 911.....just sitting in the panamera and looking at the 911 just 10 feet away in the showroom foor..
panamera is for the family guys who have money and are tired of the s class, 7 series, and other big 4 door cars..

Awesome topic. In my opinion it really highlights the state of confusion/ignorance among a lot of buyers. I got a 991 3.4 manual last summer coming out of a 09' 997.2. I have driven the panamera in 3 or 4 variations including the incredible GTS. Its an awesome car - but its a sedan. A buyer might like the idea of a 911 then decide a panamera ticks more boxes for them - that person simply has decided to buy a sedan over a sports car. What drives a spike through my heart is the people who insist that their Panameras - AMGs, Ms, and now Cayennes are sports cars. Literally. The truth is aside from the image and look of a 911 sports car, you probably have to be a driving enthusiast to really and truly say that the loss of convenience in a small 2 door is worth the added driving pleasure - especially since some Sedans are rather engaging to drive. I have a friend who went from an M3 to an X5M. He loves the truck and said to me "I really am a truck kinda guy" - what he did not say was: my X5M is a sports car. I have come across too many people who say their panameras and cayennes are sports cars...

My 2 cents :)
