00R Lists His Top 007 BIGGEST Disappointments Of 2012
In the beginning of January, I made sure to take some time and really THINK about the vehicles I had the fantastic opportunity to drive and experience. I love what I do, even when it comes down to the bullsh!t this industry is rampant with.

00R Lists His Top 007 Of 2012 - Favorite Rides Of The Year

Even better, I love being able to share my findings with you, the automotive elite. Thank you for the opportunity.

BUT if I just told you about all the positive experiences, that wouldn't exactly be valuable. You also have to know what vehicles to avoid or were simply let downs.

Please keep in mind these are vehicles I have driven in 2012. That said, let's get right to it.

1) VW Golf R: Being that I am a Volkswagen Golf owner, you probably didn't expect this. Well, now this is happening. Here's the problem with the Golf R. The MKIV that preceeded it had that unreal VR6 motor, as did the MKV. For the MKVI they equipped it with a forced induction four-cylinder that is no more special than the GTI's unit. It sounds terrible and lags. In addition, remember the MKIV had that sweet and unique interior? In the MKV and MKVI now you get a pretty generic GTI interior. So, essentially you're paying $34,000 for an all-wheel drive GTI with an aero kit and wheels. I'd take my modded Golf over the R variant any day of the week.

2) Fiat 500 Abarth: I had HUGE expectations for this little guy, I am not going to lie. Plenty of folks talk about how it is so much fun but for me, it wasn't all that and a bag of chips. The only good elements of the Fiat 500 Abarth is it pretty amazing exhaust note and the fact it gets the most attention from women I've ever experienced behind the wheel. When ladies are blowing you kisses and stopping to talk to you, you know you've hit the motherlode. The problems start with its driving position, which makes you feel like you're driving a truck rather than a tiny two seater. Oh, yeah, it's backseats are completely useless but not as useless as its cargo space. Its cheap interior is just the icing on the cake. Long story short, it makes a great fashion accessory and babe magnet but that's about it. I'd opt for a dog as it will likely be more reliable and get you the same results, results may differ.

3) MINI Cooper Coupe: So, MINI took the practicality of the Cooper and created a stylized, two-seat version that looks like it's wearing a backwards hat. While I could just end there, I'll add one more thing. It doesn't drive any different than the standard Cooper AND you pay more! Ferrari, Lamborghini and Porsche can get away with paying more for less in the 430 Scuderia, Superleggera and GT3RS. MINI, not so much.

4) Jaguar XKR-S Convertible: I remember the first time I saw the XKR-S in the flesh. It was a white coupe at the 2012 New York Auto Show and it looked like automotive pornography. Given that it is one of the most powerful Jags ever built and a performance enhancement on top of the already performance-tweaked XKR, I was ready for the most hardcore Jaguar ever. Unfortunately, it fell short because it felt exactly like an XKR with a touch more power.

5) Porsche Panamera GTS: Being that the Panamera is an incredibly versatile vehicle for the Porschephile with a family to haul, I was intrigued by what another model could do the Panamera lineup. I loved the Alcantara-laden interior and burly V8 sound, but at the end of the day it seems to be another variant to fill in a meaningless gap for Porsche. Stick to the six-cylinder Panamera and remember if you pick up a Panamera you're NOT going to go to the track.

6) Buick Verano: In the General Motors world, Buick isn't always the beneficiary of a totally unique product, like the LaCrosse, which is actually based on an Opel's chassis. While one of my favorite PR reps in the biz is a HUGE fan of the Verano, I couldn't get over why ANYONE would pay a premium of nearly $6,000 bucks when the Chevrolet Cruze is a really good car to start with! While the quieter interior and slightly improved ride quality was enjoyed, the Verano's biggest problem is that the Cruze exists.

7) Toyota Prius C: One of this year's most intriguing stories was how the Toyota Prius C became the cheap alternative energy vehicle to buy. When it was released, it sold in droves thereby cremating the Chevrolet Volt and Nissan Leaf. Starting at $18,950 it is one of the least expensive hybrids on the market. Its biggest problem though is it feels cheap inside and out. And it's underpowered. To keep this brief, I despised driving it every minute I had it during its week-long stay; however, I did net 44 mpg during my time with it, which is the same mpg I achieved with its big brother, the standard Prius.

I don't understand why "chicks dig" the Fiat 500 Abarth. Oooo sexy sub-compact! So hot!!

That car is too small, too ugly, the interior sucks.

More proof that stupid, overweight, uninformed American consumers will buy garbage because they like the commercial. Charlie Sheen! Hilarious. No, stupid. The girl used in them is a 7 foot tall Amazon freak with a nasty, angry, "they took my government check due to austerity" sounding voice.

I'm guessing you don't live in the states. I think I've seen 10 on the road that I can remember. Saw some at a rental car lot in San Antonio last month as well. I realize bashing Americans is a fun past time for Europeans but if you knew that Fiat anticipated that they would sell 6000 units per month, they've fallen well below expectations. Some links for your reading...

http://www.autoblog.com/2011/09/27/fiat-500-sales-in-u-s-not-meeting-expectations-amidst-marketing/

Actual sales figures are in this next link.

http://www.fiat500usa.com/2012/10/fiat-500-september-sales-hit-all-time.html

Some points to consider:
1. I don't think many overweight people are buying Fiat 500's.
2. Might want to inform yourself about actual sales (500 far below Mini) before making statements about American's shopping habits.
3. Charlie Sheen is an idiot.
4. Only people I see driving them are college kids and the sad broke urban coffee shop dwellers trying to look like Europeans.

Just my $.02 since people can't seem to make comments without being jerks.

I am an American...when I see stupid commercials (most of them are) I expect them to target the lowest common denominator, which is the overweight, uninformed, unintelligent consumer.

M35T and OOR you ar free to your opinions. As for the Fiat Abarth I and about 45,000 people who bought it completely disagree with you.You don't by it for room. You buy it because it is fun to drive. As for the interior being cheap it is about on par with my 06 Coopers S's dashboard. Further Fiat 500's ARE reliable. But here is my question about Infiniti. The 3.7 V6 engine (also used in the 370Z)is still a rough coarse unrefined engine. Every single auto journalist who has reported on any V6 Infinit or Nissan product has leveled critism at this engine for yrs. Yet Nissan still refuses to redesign it. Why is that and why should people pay all that money for a V6 Infiniti when
there are other Marquee's that have more refined engines(As in Toyota, Mercedes, Audi, Acura, Honda etc.)

The comment that the MINI Coupe drives "just like the standard MINI" is inaccurate.

The S-Coupe has the lowest center of gravity, corners better and is more balanced than the Cooper S Hardtop. And a better Zero-60 time.

This isn't a subjective observation. It's borne out by the specs.

The differences may not be worth the extra $2,000 or so over the price of the standard model. But they are real.

I'm surprised by your assessment of the Golf R, 00R. but I'm glad to see your opinion. I was considering the car as a significant downsize of my current drive in the next couple of years. Maybe they will offer a different engine with the redesign? One can only hope.

I agree that Golf R may not be a great value. I still really like it and the I4T keeps the weight down off the nose of the car vs. the '6'. And along with the AWD, it must be a blast coming out of the turns. But yeah, the GTI is probably a whole lot better deal.

I agree with just about every choice and the reasons behind them... I had always criticized the R32 for it's dated motor but apparantly the replacement sucks too. The Fiat is simply garbage IMO. The rest were just misses, not hits.

I rather liked the Verano. It had a decent amount of pep, nice interior, and low price.

trmckin-By in large I agree with most of your comments on the Fiat 500.
Charlie Sheen is an idiot.Fiat did originally way over anticipate intial sales of the 500.However their sales have more than doubled compared to 2011.It's really not a good car for fat people. I will point out though that Europeans are used to small cars. So fat people in Europe will squeeze themselve's in to small cars anyway. As for college kids being the only people driving them I would say it depends on where you live in the US. Where I live i see a lot of women of all ages driving base model 500's as well as older men. I've yet to see an Abarth but I would suspect a slightly different demographic attracted to that model.I own an 06 Coopers S. The 500 does not handle as well but is a lot more comfortable to ride in, has more rear room and more cargo room. But lets be realistic. You have to like small cars. The engine in the 500 is very free reving and quite smooth. For me it would have to be an Abarth, however. As for the commercials I must admit I don't find it objectionable to see an attractive women in any commercial clothed or uncloathed. The car is qurky and a lot of fun to drive. If you are a car enthusiast isn't that what it's all about?
