DEBATE: What Is The MOST OVERPRICED Car Under $80,000?
Just the other day I had the opportunity to write down my thoughts on the most disappointing cars of 2012. I don't mean to be a downer but sometimes the truth just needs to be said, folks.

And we're looking for more of the truth. This time around, to be more specific, we want to know what cars YOU think are the most overpriced under $80,000.

Is it something like the Toyota Prius C, which benefits from Toyota's amazing hybrid tech but feels more like a $10,000 Hyundai from 1999?

Or how about the Cadillac Escalade, which is really a warmed over Chevrolet/GMC?

While those are merely two examples of products I've had experiences with, we really want to know which cars YOU think aren't worth those extra bills.

So, what is the MOST OVERPRICED car under $80,000 dollars?

Well, the new Infiniti G Convertible IPL is over $60,000 for reasons entirely unclear to me. The non-IPL version isn't exactly a great car, being already overpriced at over $50k for a more "refined" Nissan Z, and the IPL trim costs $10k more for identical performance. So I'll submit it as a contender here.

You have a point with the IPL, where you go wrong is saying that the G37 is not a great car, because it is, also, it's at the end of its life cycle and will be replaced this summer.

(Sorry about double-posting.) The 2013 Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8 has an msrp in the high $60000s (with any options), and even though it might be very performant it's a Jeep and paying close to $70k for a Jeep is kind of embarrassing. The Escalade is at least branded as a Cadillac.

Disagree. The Jeep brand has actual heritage, something to be proud of if you're an American - the Wrangler is true to form and the Grand Cherokee was one of the first luxury SUV's on the market (Grand Wagoneer at the time).

While there is nothing wrong with it's interior, further refinement and higher quality materials would only add $10k more to the price, so those who want a true 4X4 with a nice interior and performance should look no further.

The above comments coming from a satisfied Range Rover Sport owner who has plenty of respect for Jeep, as long as weren't not talking about the Liberty, Compass or Patriot - those are "Feeps".

If anything the V8 will go up in value once it changes back to a 6 and gets softer once again.

that's funny. logically speaking, the M3 is UNDERPRICED. you'd need to spend nearly double to get a car that outperforms it.

do tell us oh great one...what OUTPERFORMS the M3 for $70,000?

I'll nominate the Smart fortwo Convertible. Starting at $17,800, being a highway deathtrap, and 38 mpg... I don't see why anyone would spend that when you could get a Chevy Cruze, Dodge Dart, Fiat 500, Ford Fiesta, Ford Focus, Elantra, Forte, Mazda 3, etc... the list goes on.. All have a lower starting price, more interior space, and better MPG.

Agreed. I dont understand the point of the Smart car other than if you want to look different and take up half a parking spot. No cargo space, no safety and it doesn't give impressive fuel mileage given the size of the car.

For the new Porsche Boxster S, it all depends on what you want in the car. If you want a lot of amenities, luxuries and conveniences, the options will quickly drive the car into the over priced territory. If you want it for the performance, handling and fun to drive factor, it is still reasonably priced. How many $60K convertibles run the ring in in less than 7:58? (Ferrari F430 F1 - 7:55)

almost all of those are leaders in their class and sell serious volume. so if they are overpriced why are they outselling less expensive competitors?

All BMWs especially the 3 series, Porsches and Benzes. It's only going to get worse as manufacturers continue to release 4 cylinder luxury cars with 40k price tags. I can't see myself spending 40 k on a 4 cylinder anything.

1) the Infiniti G coupe is a nice car, but not for over $50k. Let alone $60k
2) Jeep has heritage but that heritage is not ~$70k for a Grand Cherokee. The SRT is very fast in a straight line but once you're asking for that kind of money you are competing with vehicles that you don't have to provide excuses for. And "but it's really fast" is what you have to say every time someone looks at you bug-eyed when you tell them what your monthly payment for your Jeep happens to be. Indeed, you drive a Ranger Rover Sport. I wonder why you chose it over a Grand Cherokee SRT :-P

I agree 100% Its just a Tahoe/Suburban/Yukon with a different grill and instrument cluster. It has the same cheap plastic interior and thin cheap leather that will crack after 2 years. You can get a Tahoe/Suburban with the same options for half the price. If it were its own unique vehicle and wasn't a rebadged tahoe/suburban/yukon. Fail but us Americans are stupid enough to fall for it.

opinions are all well and good. but 'overpriced' implies that people simply won't pay what a manufacturers is asking. so just look at the sales bombs and there's your answer.

The vast majority of cars on the road today fall into the "under $80k" segment. Whether a specific car is "overprced" depends greatly the value one places on it. This is such an open ended question that it lacks value. Opinions are like..

By far the Range Rover Evoque, with its uuuuugly bashed in roof and lamentable lack of real 'Range Rover' luxury inside.
