Wow - - - the proverbial wheel fell off BMW in January!
A I've said before, it is only a matter of time before the 3 Series losses it leadership crown. BMW moved an anemic 4,831 3 Series (down 27.9%) while Mercedes sold an incredible 7,214 C Class cars. The new 3 Series is not nearly as loved as previous models.

Even more incredible in their fall is car sales - - - down 15.1% while SUV sales are up. BMWs tag line is quickly changing from the "Ultimate driving machine" to the "Ultimate SUV".

yup, and more than 1/3 of the 3-series line (wagon, coupes and sedans) is currently either unavailable or in it's last few months of production before the new wagon and 4-series coupes and convertibles come on the market as 2014 models. could that possibly have something to do with sales being down 27% over last january??

Numbers don't lie. I can't wait to see how some of the biased autospies members swing this one. Bmw was behind Mercedes in US sells all year in 2012, all of a sudden Dec. comes and BMW explodes with sells. (Giving their products away to win the sells crown) A month later, Mercedes is still selling more products in the USA and BMW's sells cool. Hmmm If Bmw didn't give away cars to stay ahead of Mercedes please explain this trend.

BMW will fall even FURTHER behind once the Mercedes-Benz CLA is available. The CLA will be featured in a commercial during the Super Bowl and it will be a HUGE boost to Mercedes-Benz.

The effect that BMW's incentives have on its profit margin will be revealed in the quarterly report. BMW will once again have a lower profit margin than Audi due to heavily discounting its cars in order to sell more volume.

not really...once the 3-series wagon, 4-series coupes and convertibles, refreshed 5-series, all new X5, 320i sedans, M6 gran coupe, new Z4 and a few others come online in 2013. don't worry.

I like MB but wait to see the MB numbers....Till then, January is always low in sales....(as far as I know)....

Well MB is 8,000 cars ahead in only one month with almost an entire line up being older than the Bmw lineup. Moreover Mercedes has yet to introduce the CLA A class to the US market. Things are getter interesting.

May be I am wrong , but what is killing them, ugly designs (except 6 series) ..also they are asking TOO much for the 6GT, specially cause BMW still does not project luxury as MB in the sense that MB does not project Sportiness as BMW. 3 series is a design that they need to be very careful cause is the main face of BMW. Also 1 series too expensive to compete with other a lot cheaper and offer the same, so adjust the prices. Next, build the 2GT, looks like a winner to fight the CLA and add more reliability to your engines. I know they wont reach Toyota but definitely have all the necessary engineering to reach MB.

The 3 series is part of the problem. As an owner of a previous generation 335i, I drove a new 2013 3-series for a week....really did not like it at all. So much of the feel of the prior generation is gone. An aquaintance who also has a new one (since his previous gen was totalled) is not happy with the new version either.

Will definitely be checking out MB, Audi and Porsche.

I think what really hurt BMW is the "line designations". Too many people get confused. keep it simple, just do packages, not 5 different lines! (technically 4 lines and 1 non designated line).
However, the 3 series is so much more car than the C class. Quicker, better nav, better AWD, free maintenance. I mean cmon, $250 for an oil change MB?

"line designations"? How the hell does this hurt the brand that took the sales crown last year with the same "line designations"? no sense.

Did BMW just pull sales into 2012 with incentives?
Looking at the 3-series prices, they need to cut prices by 20%.

Competition is more robust. Lexus is coming back. Audi, MB, and Cadillac are starting to put out products that really challenge BMW. The Q50 could be a real formidable rival to the F30. The G37 was on the same level as the E90.

The fact of the matter is that when you are on top, everybody wants a piece of that pie and will do what they have to do to get a piece.

audi is definitely hitting BMW hard with some great cars and great design. the other not so much. mercedes is relying on prestige and reputation. and the ES and RX are driving lexus as they have for more than a decade so not sure how those cars affect BMW--the GS has already bombed with sales down to only 1000 a month and the LS is not a volume car.
