How Do You Appeal To A Generation That Doesn't Care About Cars?
It’s not Gen Y’s fault that they don’t give a whit about cars. If you’re living in your parent’s basement with no job, buying a car isn’t at the top of your to-do list. If you’re flipping burgers for a living, gas prices, insurance premiums and lease payments (on top of your college loans), pretty much preclude purchasing that great-looking Prius.

This is why we’re seeing fewer and fewer kids rushing to the DMV on their 16th birthday. More than 25% of all Gen Y’ers don’t have a driver’s license. Almost 30% of 19 year-olds aren’t licensed to drive, even if they could afford the gas.

We’re witnessing the collision of a number of different factors that will have a seismic effect on the future of the auto industry. Gen Y may be leading the charge, but the upcoming changes will impact millions of businesses.

There are three strategies, pick one 1) You don't appeal to them, 2) You design a car full of electronic/communication gadgets and set up driver days for them to do touchy, feely, or 3) You set up or buy a car on demand/car sharing/Zip Car business because that is where these people are headed.

Lower used car prices. Most teens will probably end up in a used car, but the only ones that are affordable are much older models. It is no longer affordable for a lot of teens to own a car.

I live in a well off area, most of the high school kids who are old enough have a car, or share one with a sibling. You leave the well off areas of town and car ownership rates plummet.

Create a series of ads that vilifies cars and warns young kid of their dangers. Worked for the "Just Say No" campaign.

In larger urban areas (namely New York, NY) I would NOT own a car, unless I traveled out of state often. The public transit system is so good that there is hardly a need for having your own car; compounded with the fact that if you DID have your own car, you would never be able to PARK it--either at your home or destination.

This whole "generation that doesn't care about cars" thing I keep hearing is B.S.
Some clown made it up and now all the sheep keep repeating it.
Maybe we should spend a million a a worthless University study to see if its real

There is no reason to try and force teens to car about cars. It is good that they have become more evolved.
