Hyundai Interested in Jaguar?
Jaguar, a jewel in the crown of Britain's car industry, owned by Hyundai of Korea? The gin'n'Jag set might splutter at the thought, but a seismic shift in the British carmaking landscape could be just around the corner.
Jaguar's travails have prompted much speculation about its future and Hyundai is one of three suitors rumoured to have been interested in the past six months. Earlier in the year, Peugeot and Renault were linked to the British marque, both being rebutted with the same response: 'Jaguar is not for sale.'

But that was before last week, when its owner, the US giant Ford, reported a grim $254m second-quarter loss - twice that forecast only two weeks earlier. July sales in North America unexpectedly fell behind those of Toyota for the first time: a disastrous performance. And the denials also came before cross-town rival GM was forced into alliance talks with Renault-Nissan, a merger that would potentially push struggling Ford further down the automotive food chain.

Not surprisingly, its embattled chairman, Bill Ford, announced on Wednesday that Goldman Sachs banker Ken Leet, a long-time company adviser, would be exploring 'a broad range of strategic alternatives'. Although Ford's statement did not explicitly refer to Jaguar, the link was quickly made.

Cartrash- Actually Huyundai has a golden opportunity here. If they buy Jag, they automatically have entered into the fray with Lexus. With the excellent quality that Hyundai has been showing lately, they might indeed be able to salvage the brand and keep it in the running with the luxury leaders. Don't discount them yet.

Cartrash- Well at one time there wasn't enough panche in the Toyota name either. They gotta start somewhere, and this is a good starting point.

hyundai/jag would have an advantage over toyota/lexus as it already has a brand name with prestige, rather than having to invent it. but jag is almost a british institution, it would be sad to see it become korean.

I thought Goldman Sachs bankers loved to perform post-hostile-takeover downsizing, then chop the pieces of company to other corporations for profit?

Honda has Acura. BMW just ditch Land Rover not so long ago. Toyota has Lexus. All 3 have their hands full. I don't think any of them has any interest in buying Jaguar. They don't want a money losing company to drag them down, whereas Hyundai do not have a Luxury brand. This partnership can really help both companies. Hyundai need a prestige name. Jaguar needs a reliable car. Hyundai is getting really good at building reliable cars. They are up there with Toyota and Honda in initial quality.

Guys guys guys, do not look at a Hyundai ownership of Jaguar to bring down the prestige that Jaguar offers in luxury automobiles. I doubt they will be sharing parts bins with Hyundai. Nothing major at least. Ford is not exactly any better quality than Hyundai. I think the Hyundai's actually better.

Seriously, the consumers won't really care who owns Jaguar if they like the design and quality they will buy it regardless. Hyundai might just be the financial support Jaguar needs to revamp their whole lineup giving that added touch the "Brit" car needs.

Maybe then Jaguar will be up there with Motor Werks and Benz. It may even decrease the depreciation of their cars. Jaguars drop like DOMESTICS!. Wait.. it's basically a domestic!. At least it won't be if Hyundai owns it. :-)

IMO it's all about financing a car maker so they have more options to build a better quality vehicle
