Long line of faulty cars muddies Toyota image

Long line of faulty cars muddies Toyota image
The news is something no car owner wants to hear. Power steering on their hard-to-get hybrid could fail. Tires on their small pickups could bulge and possibly burst. Air bags may not inflate during a crash.

These recalls are the type that have long bedeviled American carmakers, but this time it is Toyota, long known as the very best for quality.

Just as Toyota appears poised to pass General Motors to become the world's largest automaker by sales, it has a growing problem with recalls that is sullying its carefully honed image.

In the United States, Toyota's largest market, the number of vehicles recalled soared to 2.2 million last year. That was double the number of vehicles recalled in 2004, and more than 10 times the 200,000 cars it recalled in 2003, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

In Japan, the number of recalled vehicles has jumped 41-fold since 2001, to 1.9 million last year. And because many of the recalls are for vehicles that are more than 10 years old, analysts fear that another wave of bad quality news may be in store.

Old News.

I understand, you're just posting an article, and you can't be blamed for the text of someone else's article. But honestly, if the article isn't new news, then the reasons for posting it are suspect.

And the article itself falls prey to some of the worst mistakes of journalism- unquoted sources, conjecture, generalizations and opinions.

I still contend that I would rather have a company recall a part that has yet to break (Toyota) than wait for a few dozen fires or even deaths (Chrysler, Ford).

I have a hunch that it'll take more than a ton of recalls to change the mind of the american consumer about Toyota. Perhaps if 60 minutes did a piece... then maybe the winds would start to shift. Maybe.

Johannas- I agree Toyota is almost GOD like to many. It will take quite a few more hits before Humpty Tumpty falls off the wall again.

Hmmm..interesting I just read here on this website that Ford is recalling 6.7 millions vechicle since 2005. But this pass thursday they just recall 1.2 million vechicles. Hmm..., a month ago or two GM recall many of it car too...hmm...

Don't try to bring up old news to cover up Ford recalling of 6.7 million car since 2005. And 1.2 millions last thursday.

Lexus- I guess many times the US maker don't get the news is because we are conditioned to expect those recalls. In Toyota's case it pretty much came as a shock to many.

I don't take joy in Ford,GM, Chrysler, MBW,Honda or even Toyota and many other auto company recall. I try not to take side, even thought I'm a hardcore Lexus Fan. I just want it to be fair, like I say it before every auto company has some kind of problem with their vechicle. The way I look at it, the more auto company we have, the more model and option we have.

Lexus

p.s. yeah it was really shocking news , I guess Toyota is getting really huge in the auto industry. I wonder how are they going to be able to manage and maintain it realiability as they venture to become the number #1 automaker in the worlds. I think Toyota will fixed the problem and continue to make more realiable vechicles. After all that what got to where they are at right now.

1970toyotamarc- You are being a bit over sensitive there. I posted several recalls for GM and Ford and you had no problem with them. The difference with this article is that more probes have just been opened and the likelyhood that Toyota will have another massive recall seems to be a close reality.
