CHICAGO AUTO SHOW: Is The 2014 Nissan GT-R EXACTLY The Opposite Of What It Was In 2008? Affordable?
Over the years, there's no question that one of the most unbelievable super performing vehicles would be the Nissan GT-R. Though it initially debuted in 2008, at the 2013 Chicago Auto Show, we got the chance to take a closer look at the 2014 GT-R.

A lot has changed since then.

First things first, it's received more power. Secondly, the next big change you'll likely realize is the interior, which has become a bit more stylized. Check out the shots below of that tri-colored interior and the carbon fiber center stack.

Lastly, the biggest change is the going rate for a GT-R. For the 2008 model year, the GT-R was an absolute steal at just under $70,000 dollars. For 2014 the barrier of entry has inflated up to $99,590.

A $30,000 difference is pretty significant but one could argue you're still receiving the bargain of the market as its performance is essentially unrivaled.

Nissan's press release follows:

  • GT-R Premium $99,590 USD
  • GT-R Black Edition $109,300 USD
About the 2014 Nissan GT-R
Following performance enhancement last year that upped the horsepower and torque of the GT-R's advanced VR38DETT 3.8-liter twin turbo V6 to 545 hp and 463 lb-ft of torque, the development and refinement of Nissan's legendry supercar continues for the 2014 model year.

Among the notable modifications are improved engine response in the mid- and upper-rpm ranges, increased body rigidity and specification changes to the shock absorbers, front anti-roll bar and springs that result in a lower center of gravity. The result is improved high-speed handling and more refined ride comfort. As in previous years the GT-R engine is hand-assembled in a special clean room – for 2014 an aluminum nameplate is added to each engine showing the name of the individual engine builder.

Other changes include the addition of a new Premium Interior Package, which features hand-stitched Amber Red semi-aniline leather appointments (front seats only). A new red-accented steering wheel is added to Black Edition models.

The interior again features sculpted performance bucket seats for an optimal driving position and a cockpit-style instrument panel with a large center-mounted tachometer and multi-function display – which includes mechanical and driving information, as well as an on-board driving recorder. A specially designed 11-speaker Bose® sound system – which provides sound quality suitable for a supercar, is standard – along with a RearView Monitor.

The 2014 Nissan GT-R is offered in two models – GT-R Premium and the GT-R Black Edition with special lightweight black aluminum forged RAYS® wheels, unique red and black interior, Recaro® leather-appointed seats and a unique dry carbon fiber rear spoiler.

My view is this: for the people for whom $30000 isn't that big a deal, the GT-R is not worth purchasing because it's got no status among their Porsche and Aston and R8-driving buddies.

For the people for whom $30000 is a big deal, the GT-R is now that much worse a purchase. Used to be you could get a GT-R and an XTerra together for $100k and there's all the cars you'll need any day of the year. Now after $100k you still need to buy a normal car to drive.(GT-R might work as your only car in some places, but in, say, the Midwest, not really.)

Japanese manufacturers used that business model for years - come in at a ultralow price, get market share and then raise prices - no surprise. I wonder how much Nissan lost on every GTR they sold at 70K. Is it affordable still? sure - about the best price/performance option available. Only problem is that the 100K price would probably preclude the demographic of the enthusiast that would want a GTR.

Interior is still a design mess, but the black version is a higher quality mess and the black exterior color makes the car look ominous, instead of like a Japanese pony car. Really a fabulous car for persons who are solely interested in performance in their $100K+ cars.

While I agree the interior is a bit harsh on the eyes, the GT-R has always exceeded my expectations — by a lot — when it comes to interior quality.

I wouldn't call a $70,000 dollar car affordable. It is exactly what it was: A toy that only the very wealthy can afford (the insurance alone is through the roof). Compared to other cars for the ~$100,000 price tag, it is still a very solid option. Godzilla is a performance machine.

Give me a freaking "BREAK" this Nissan GT-R has around 545 hp, is in the 2s club from 0-60 and have one of the fastest lap time in the famous Nurburgring. And cost about the same price as the Porsche 911 Carrera which only has between 350-400 hp depend on trim model. The Nissan GT-R easily DESTROY this car both in a straight line and around the track.

At least from my last research "ONLY" the Porsche 911 Turbo S (in the Porsche line up or models) which cost close to $200k can run neck and neck with the Nissan GT-R. I still think the Nissan GT-R is a very impressive super sports car considering that it came out in 2008.

This car is unbelievably good, but it sure needs a better looking interior and I can't wait to see the next model of it losing some 300 lbs or so. Get rid of the back seat and reduce the length by few inches.

Consider that obama bucks are virtually worthless, 100K is what it now takes to buy a GTR. Wait another 3 years and you will be paying that much for a loaf of bread.
