What Would Life Be Like If It Was As Reliable As A Volkswagen?

Despite living in California for nearly eight years now, and recently becoming a citizen of these United States, I still consider myself to be an Englishman. To be English in America is a generally pleasant experience – no man will ever get tired of pretty girls telling him how cute his accent is – but it is also a life full of little differences which remind you every day that this is not your home, even though it is where you live.

One such difference I have noted, particularly around this site, is the American perception of Volkswagen, which I find quite puzzling.

So please indulge me by engaging in a brief mind exercise and bounce this scenario around your brain for a moment: What if everything in life was as reliable as a Volkswagen?

Hmmm... Probably very routine.

Just regular maintenance and impeccable quality.

Agent you're delusional. VW is German for fix or repair daily. (I admit they're doing better recently)

It depends. VW had some very dark days of reliability in the late '90s and early '00s. Like many German manufacturers, they struggled with the integration and reliability of complex electronics. However, in the last few years VW has greatly improved this. My 2011 GTI has been flawless.

All that said, Americans have great memories of brands and technologies that had dark times, so VW still has a dark cloud over it in most American's eyes. Another example of this is most American's refusal to consider modern diesel automobiles because of the abominations they remember from the GM efforts in the 1980s.

Bottom line - Americans are total automotive morons, so don't pay much attention to their idiotic views. And, oh, I am a natural-born American, so don't poke me for the comment.

Americans are total automotive morons.....right ! Every European and Japanese automotive manufacturer would give his right testicle to increase their American market share by 5%. Problem is they don't know how so who is the moron. In addition everyone in the world wants to live here (weather they admit it or not)...its still the greatest country in the world.

I am an American Citizen, and I can tell you even though we are great, S Korea, Japan, UK and other major EU countries could care less about living here. Some of them (S Korea, Japan) are actually more technologically advanced. Not every country is Mexico dude..
