VIDEO: Mercedes' A45 AMG Caught WHISTLING In ACTION
For me, sound matters. To have the very best experience in whatever I am driving, my ears need to be tickled with the best intake noise, engine roar and exhaust note.
I need that orchestral experience.
And to be straightforward, four-cylinder motors always let me down. They're too buzzy, chattery and just sound like crap nine times out of 10. I would say out of the manufacturers I've had the pleasure of testing that Jaguar Land Rover's four-cylinder is the best so far closely followed by the Subaru boxer four — I am strictly speaking in terms of sound.
JLR has refined their powerplant quite a bit while Subaru's is a bit more brute-ish. Slap a few mods on it and soon enough you have a mean sounding 'boob.
Now AMG is known for its burly V8. The damn thing is completely unhinged and isn't apologetic. So, what happens when AMG gets to work on a four-cylinder? Well, one thing is for sure: You will know an A45 is coming because you'll hear its turbo whistle first. The engine note reminds me of a MINI JCW. Lastly, the exhaust note has a pretty nifty burp on shifts — it seems MUCH louder than DCT-equipped VW GTIs and BMW Ms.
All of that said, what say you?
Do YOU dig the A45's sound or is that whistling too much to handle?

It is jet-like.
I have to say I have NEVER heard a stock vehicle sound anything close to this. Hell, I haven't even heard a modified vehicle sound like this.
Pretty crazy.

Other than that TERRIBLE whistling it sounds great. Why couldn't they highlight the intake sound rather than create a turbo that sounds like a tea kettle.
