What About You? Study Reveals The 60% Of European Drivers Think Autonomous Vehicles Are A Great Idea
A recent study made by Bosch in Europe shows that the majority of drivers consider autonomous vehicles a good idea.

Bosch, the world’s largest supplier of automotive components, wanted to know the European drivers opinion about self-driving cars. The company interviewed 3,000 drivers, from which 60% said that autonomous vehicles are ‘a good idea’, but they also believe that a self-driving car should also offer the driver the possibility to take over whenever he wants.

This is because SmartEuros understand that a anonymous car would be driven at peak efficiency and make the smallest global carbon footprinit.

It's autonomous... Not anonymous.

You frequently use the "SmartEuro" descriptor but you haven't told us what you drive.

I should not matter what I drive because my points are valid. The truth is am a car enthusiast, but I do not own a car because I also am committed to the environment, so I use public transport. If I did own a car, it would be Smart and efficient, either Asian or Euro.

A car enthusiast but you don't own a car? Interesting. All I see is you bashing every vehicle and article out there and condemning others way of life. Tell us... which makes and models do you prefer? Smart and efficient doesn't narrow it down.

Well, I am British and I believe that the study is like most studies a complete bollocks........

Go and ask a German if they believe autonomous vehicles are a good idea ?

The only idiots who would have thought that it would be a good idea are French and Belgian drivers as they are completely flummoxed by the controls that are found in vehicles.

I would rather my 75 year old grandmother have an autonomous vehicle, than to see her driving around town (many in their 70's are still legally licensed to drive). And by the way, I'd venture to guess over 90% of those in their 70's would prefer to have somebody else drive them, but most can't afford a driver or don't feel comfortable taking mass transit or don't have family to drive them around.

If it's a feature that allows you to take over whenever... I don't see the harm in it. Quizz makes a good point regarding the elderly... however... teaching the elderly to use features like that won't be an easy task unless it's very simple. My parents in their early 60's have trouble with smart phones and pc's. Watching them fool with the features on their car like nav and bluetooth is almost comical.

It will never happen. Autonomous cars will bankrupt local govts, they will further raise prices on cars and limit driver involvement.
No duis, speeding tix, red light tix etc. it will not happen.

And thats why California, Nevada, Florida, and soon to be Colorado have legalized it? Do you think these multibillion dollar companies would be further investing in this technology if it would never happen? Think about it..

Yea. DUIs, speeding tickets, and red light tickets will stop the 30000 lives saved lost by car accidents in the US per year, the 2 million injuries from car accidents per year, the billions of dollars saved in accident related costs, the hours saved from less commuting time and more working time, etc.

Congress not passing driverless cars because cops can't give anymore DUIs and speeding tickets will not work. And since manual driving will be an option, cops will still be able to give speeding tickets...

People that actually believe autonomous cars are a bad idea are complete idiots. Grant it this is a car enthusiast website, so the majority will think its a bad idea.

Autonomous cars will not take driving away. Do you really think there wont be a manual mode? If you don't want to be driven by your car then you can easily take it off autopilot and drive it manually!

Autonomous driving will bring death tolls by accidents down tremendously and in 30-40 years when most cars are autonomous, accidents may be close to rock bottom. Tons of money will be saved by drastically improved traffic efficiency. Cars will have black boxes with this type of technology so if you're driverless car crashes, insurance will cover it.

Those of you who think the "fun in driving" is more important than the safety and lives of millions of people, please take your 2003 Ford Mustang and move to an underdeveloped country with no innovation. Times are moving forward and if you don't like it, get out.

The problem is that you place way too much faith in the technology.

If you had an ounce of intelligence you would understand the limitations of the readily available tech and their inability to deal with any sudden variations in the relevant programming.

Where there are so many variables, a computer will not be able to handle the situation as well as an experienced driver.

At least not with current available tech.

have to agree somewhat with both. I think in a more controlled environment like interstates where there are more controlled circumstances, it's possible with current tech. Around the city or residential areas, no way current tech would work. I go back to a few weeks ago, a couple of neighborhood kids were sledding down their driveway. I saw them well in advance and stopped because I wasn't sure where they would stop. Sure enough, they plowed right out into the street without regard for potential traffic. Apply that situation to a vehicle computer system and there is no way to account for those sorts of scenarios. Pedestrians at times depend on drivers to make the right decisions. Like cruise control, it has it's place but don't think it could ever handle the surface streets.

I made a comment many years ago on this site that if Cruise Control were to be banned in the USA, Highway traffic accidents would reduced dramatically.

Many times i have been in a vehicle on USA Highways where the driver because they are using the Cruise Control feature, decide that they have enough freedom to do other things such as apply makeup, or type an email.

Now imagine what would happen if the vehicle is supposed to drive itself.

I95, you could very well be right. Darwin's theory definitely applies. It's not beyond reason to imagine that some people would flat out take a nap if they thought they could set it and forget it on long interstate stretches. A diesel with a long range, get in the car at 8 pm. Put it on Auto and take a nap. Could drive from Denver to Vegas without losing any waking hours ;) Joking aside, I doubt this would ever pass. It would need to have a time limit or something on it to keep people from killing themselves. Much like the cruise control fans.
