Both are great cars. I've driven the E220 CDI as a rental in Europe and the 525d (not the 520d) and it is equally impressive. They're quite powerful, fuel efficient and fun. Diesel clatter? You hardly hear anything, especially when warm.

Note that the BMW 525d is a 6cyl engine though, so not a direct comparison with the 520d. It (525d) ought to have felt much more lively than the 4cyl E220CDi.

I know, and it did. The 525d doesn't compete with the E220 CDI, that's true, but the E220 CDI wasn't a slouch either. Truth be told, I was at first a little skeptical about the E220 CDI. I thought a 4-cylinder turbodiesel in an E-Class might be a little underpowered: it wasn't. I had the car for nearly a week and I was most pleased and impressed. We need stuff like this in the US.

The 525d was pretty nice. It was the sportier drive, as expected. I only had it for three days if I recall correctly, but it goes, it really goes.
