BMW 4-Series Sheds Disguise to Reveal Production Car - Significantly Less Bold Design Than Concept!
This is the production version of BMW’s 4-series Coupé, stripped of most of the disguise that has until now hidden the shape of the finished vehicle.

Recently previewed as a concept at the Los Angeles motor show, the 4-series will go on sale late next year, replacing the 3-series Coupé.

It’s clear from these images that some of the show car’s bolder styling details will not make it into production. The treatment of the lower rear bumper is much more conventional, without the concept’s full-width mesh insert and integrated tailpipes.

At the front the concept’s distinctive lower bumper is retained, along with the large air intakes below the headlamps.

The concept’s razor sharp crease lines along the bodyside are clearly evident, although the door handle has moved above the strong line that runs from the front wing to the rear three-quarter panel.

The 4-series range will be launched with the coupé, followed by a convertible in 2014. Later that year the much-discussed M4 will finally appear, with a cabrio version in 2015.

BMW will add a four-door 4-series GranCoupé, with the distinct possibility of an M4 GranCoupé to complete the line-up.

Maybe not as radical but there appears to be a tautness and fluidity to the surfacing and dimensions that interests me. The outgoing 3 series coupe always looked a bit dicombobulated to me design wise, unappealing and just so so. This one sits nice, pleasing to the eye. Hopefully the details when revealed more fully will not disappoint.

Definitely not as appealing as the concept. The only appealing design element seems to be the front-end, which does look aggressive and stylish. Anything aft of the windshield could pass for a car from any other maker. And non-adjusting rear headrests, and speaker warts in the backseat, thumbs down.

So this is a direct competitor to Mercedes C coupe and Audi S5?

other way around...the audi and the c coupe are competitors to the 4-series coupe. and only the audi really compares.

The rear seat design is awful!

As I said MB , BMW and Audi use to create wonderful concepts, but fail to execute a faithful copy of the original concept..Hopefully they keep the front of the concept...

Still a lot of key areas are covered so it hard to tell, but of course the regular version will be toned down from the concept. I have a feeling its going to look very good regardless, and judging by how the M4 prototype looks I bet the M version will blow the concept away in every way.

GermanNut, your Audi must have the x-ray vision option.

As I approach retirement under the cloud of a career that fizzled prematurely, I can no longer justify shopping BMW's. Just as well, they no longer interest me. Model for model they are too big, too heavy, overstuffed with complexity, unreliable, numb-driving, heavy depreciating, etc. I want to be hopeful for the '2' series, but if it is priced "stupid" like the '1' was, they can keep it. This new '4' is just a reiteration of the '70's Pontiac Grand Prix, only less distinctive.

You must not like any luxury car then, b/c you just described them all.

With Mercedes increasingly turning to a pimpmobile design motif, BMW had better up their game and turn out new cars that strongly resemble their show concept cars which create lots of 'sizzle.'

The staid, placid Tutonic look won't cut it anymore.

And "pimpmobile design motif" is a good thing?

lol. mercedes design language has become overwrought, and in some case, quite tacky. witness the latest CLS, the portly new SL and the garish LED lights across the lineup.

thank god bmw and audi have maintained design integrity across much of the lineup. can't say the same for most other premium car makers.

The M version has too because the standard looks like a sleeper
