Mercedes A class suffers decisive defeat in the 2013 Car of the Year contest
The Volkswagen Golf won as the 2013 European Car of the Year, easily beating the Mercedes-Benz A class (which only earned fifth place). Biggest mistake was making it FWD. Had the A Class been RWD it would have likely won.

Really ??

Like how the RWD BMW 1-Series won it so clearly ?

Isn't the Golf FWD?

I do wonder, though, in this class if Mercedes' lack of a manual transmission might have impacted its placement, in addition to its price.

Very strange. I just checked the winners of the ECOTY since 1990. Not one BMW, Audi or Mercedes has won, or even barely landed in 2nd or 3rd place. Only 2 Mercedes and 2 Audis even placed in 2nd or 3rd in the past 23 years.

Actually, in the entire history of ECOTY since 1964, BMW has never won it. Audi only twice. And Mercedes only once.
