Scion May Rely On Hybrid Motor Instead Of Turbocharging For Performance Boost In FR-S
A more potent Toyota GT-86 is on the way, but electric motor assist could be used instead of turbocharging.

It’s no secret that Toyota is currently working on a high-performance version of its highly acclaimed GT-86/Scion FR-S sports coupe. Only days after the Japanese automaker revealed a nearly production-ready GT-86 convertible concept at the Geneva Motor Show, Autocar is reporting that Toyota is considering a high-performance gasoline-electric hybrid version. In fact, chief engineer Tetsuya Tada says that his team is already working on the car’s mid-life facelift.

This is why Toyota is a great SmartAsian company! A fast car that pollutes fewer MPG is what dumb americans fail to do, like Corovette, Viper and Mustang. Where are their hybrid sportscars? Too busy making a burnout with the tyres I suppose!

I think your excuse applies here. Aside from the Mustang, the others are fairly expensive cars for the higher ups in society. You know... people that make a difference. That's how you justify a low volume gas guzzling Mercedes in Europe so it should apply everywhere.

Those electric motors can provide a lot of torque.

But at what weight penalty for the batteries? This is exactly what the FTS is NOT. The FRS is a light weight, compact handling sporty car. Throwing a few hundred lbs of batteries on the car and an electric motor isn't going to help anything.

Bonus points if they would put those motors on the FRONT wheels. Instant AWD without all the heavy transaxles.

Terrible idea. While the instant torque is good the weight of the batteries conflicts with the lightweight premise of the car and its handling.
