NEW YORK AUTO SHOW: Volkswagen Firms Up Its U.S. Golf Offerings

While the rest of the civilized world has been plugged into which Volkswagen Golf they'd be receiving in their respective market(s), the U.S. — as usual — was hung out to drive. Sure, we knew that a standard Golf, a diesel-powered version and a GTI would be on the way but what exactly would move the first two?

Finally, the wait is over as the New York Auto Show approaches.

Volkswagen issued a statement saying that a TSI motor, a diesel and the GTI will appear. That means wave "bye bye" to the five-cylinder-powered Golf. Considering I have one, I think this is a bit of a sad day. That's because the five'er actually is a great powerplant AND it sounds unique.

Now the Golf will just sound like every other fart-y four-cylinder-powered vehicle...

Three Golf versions will debut in New York

The 2015 Volkswagen Golf is bigger inside and out, lighter, more fuel efficient, and safer than the vehicle it replaces.

The seventh-generation Golf is the first Volkswagen to use the new MQB components matrix and will offer new safety features-such as collision avoidance and lane departure systems-as well as new engines and infotainment options.

At the New York International Auto Show, Volkswagen is debuting all three of the Golf versions that will go on sale next year: the entry-level TSI model; the thrifty TDI Clean Diesel; and the sporty GTI. The TSI and GTI use new versions of the EA888 turbocharged and direct-injected four-cylinder engine, while the TDI gets the new EA288 diesel engine.

The 2015 Golf will go on sale in the first half of 2014 and will be built at Volkswagen's Puebla, Mexico, factory.

That inefficient tractor motor gets me 33-35 mpg on my daily commute. Cant say the same for my old-school Civic that did similar driving.

There was no mention of the GTD. I'm still hopeful that VW will bring the GTD to the U.S. market.

A Subaru boxer engine cannot be described as "farty" sounding in the same way as other 4-cylinder engines - especially with a cat-back exhaust system. It has one of the great engine burbles of all time.

I demand a retraction and a full apology!

The 2.5 was distinctive but often bashed by the reviewers for its economy. The 1.4 or 1.8 TSI will likely provide comparable performance especially with the lighter chassis. Better fuel economy should make the Golf very competitive with the others in the segment. More importantly, the blower will permit "chipping" that could make this a fun car to mod for those so inclined.
