STUD OR DUD? First Undisguised Photos of the 2014 Mercedes S-Class Surface On The Web
The 2014 Mercedes-Benz S-Class is scheduled to be unveiled to the world on May 15 in Hamburg- But, thanks to an exceptionally resourceful photog, the highly anticipated S-Class is no longer under wraps. A completely undisguised S-Class stripped all of it’s camouflage for an advertising shoot in Germany. We’re not sure why they didn’t choose a more remote location, it’s like Aaron Rodgers grocery shopping in Green Bay and thinking no one will notice.

You can see from the photos that the bulging fender flares of the current W221 S-Class are gone, replaced by a cleaner, sleeker design, with some CLS inspirations. The updated S-Class front and rear-end seem to also confirm that the new Mercedes E-Class has been influenced by the new S-Class styling as well.

Elegant but very conservative, The Maybach look dates in out of the box.

It's hard to appreciate a car's design from pictures and I think it will be the same with this. I'm not a designer but can see the unique bodywork in the rear quarter (into the rear light) and the wide hood draping over the front tires. The one thing that I will say, and it can be said of all cars that have this feature and not just this S, is that I don't think the glass roof top help the car, any car that I've seen for that matter. As a whole, I think it will look stately and conservatively elegant as scenicbyway had described. In other words, nothing that will get a BMW/Audi to change their mind and will make MB/Lexus fans keep on wanting to have this car.

It is a matter of taste. Owning a first gen Cadillac SRX with a glass roof, and my wife having purchased a VW EOS because it was the only convertible with a sunroof, we find the glass roof makes the interior brighter and seem bigger as it is less of a cave. We wouldn't buy any vehicle that didn't offer a large glass roof.

A definite beauty. Almost looks like the S-class went up a class.

Northstar - point taken and I understand/appreciate it. I was commenting from the standpoint of someone outside looking at the car's exterior appearance. But you're right, it depends on someone's personal taste.

I like this quite a lot. Sort of what a second gen shrunk down Maybach would have looked like.

Ugh. They did so well with the interior and the front 3/4 of the car and then they KILLED it with the rear. That looks like the rear end off of a Hyundai from a generation or two ago. They ruined what was going to be the best in class car. Yuck.

If I could somehow hide that middle down-sloping crease along the rear door I may be able to live with the overall down-slope profile in the rear. I prefer the more integrated look of the infotainment screen in the BMW than the Mercedes after-thought approach, but the materials in there are top notch without question.

People that can spend 100k+ on their car without concern would never consider a Hyundai. The typical New S buyer has a garage full of other toys. None of them from Korea. The fixed income retiree on a budget will be pleased with the Hyundai product however.

MB makes a damn fine luxury automobile. Sit in one of their flagship S class models and be amazed at the level of fine detail and build quality. MB is still the hallmark and ne plus ultra of the car world.
