Will Lincoln Be The Next Brand To Bite The Dust?

Lincoln executives admit they have only one shot at reinventing their faded brand for a new generation of luxury customers. But the MKZ, the first major vehicle of a new and better Lincoln lineup, has stumbled badly out of the blocks, angering dealers, wasting a costly advertising launch and driving away customers who have waited months for undelivered cars.

After Lincoln spent more than $7.4 million to advertise the new sedan during the Super Bowl, and more for another spot during the Grammy awards, dealers had no cars because of quality problems and parts shortages at Ford Motor Co.'s Hermosillo, Mexico, plant. Dealers didn't know what to tell customers who had put down deposits because, dealers say, they received only spotty information from the factory.

...Lincoln is an underdog. Problem is, even underdogs are still subject to overwhelming scrutiny. For one, names still have power and influence on consumers in general. Humans have pretty much always wanted to be associated with individuals, sports teams, advance Technology or car companies who have that winning edge and sometimes people will go with the underdog who possess these characteristics as well. However, if the underdog (Generic whatever) has a corney, wacky, silly, weired or out of date or out of time with no real merit or legacy type of name and appeal. Their demise comes because of negative perception and out of date image. President Lincoln is probably the greatest U.S. Pres who has ever lived, but over time a car named Lincoln seems out dated these days. Ironically, Hyundai and Kia names are kinda weired names, but they have that value factor which kinda out weight the corney name. What's in a name is a powerful reality!

With mundane product offerings, I'm surprised they're still around. At least Buick did right by signing Shaq, Tiger, and Peyton for their ad campaigns.

Well, it helps when you actually build the vehicle and fulfill your orders which is what Buick has done. I've had a couple of buick rentals for business in recent months and I think they've done a pretty good job. It's not for me in terms of what I would put in my garage but from my limited experience (burning up highways in North Dakota and Texas), i was pleasantly surprised with both the regal and lacrosse.

Just looking at Lincoln's website and there is a concept vehicle called the MKC. Just from the photo's, it looks like a cross between the MDX and Touareg. By far the best looking lincoln design I've seen. That's a huge segment as far as crossovers go these days. Be nice to see a domestic brand make something like that. Would be a strong contender for my money.

Let's hope not... I took an opportunity to test drive the new MKZ this weekend and came away pretty impressed.

Not only is it absolutely stunning, it proved to be a very nice drive with a simply gorgeous interior.

Another surprise was that it was very reasonably priced given the content... Especially the Hybrid version I checked out that was well under 40K.

It doesn't appear to be an investment Ford is willing to make. Whether putting the right people in position for development and marketing or funding products that are the future of what the Lincoln brand needs to be, I don't see it. Cadillac is doing okay; at least they are NOT producing Cimmaron type products, which is the level of commitment we seem to be seeing from Lincoln.

Just put it out its misery already. And take the other brands with NOTHING to offer with them; acura, infiniti and mitsubishi, for starters.
