Ever Heard This Before? GM Banking On Big Expensive Trucks To Bring Home The Bacon
GM expects customers in the US to buy the high-end versions of the automaker’s new full-size pickup trucks, as they also offer advanced safety options.

GM forecast a boost in sales for its luxurious GM Sierra and 2014 Chevrolet Silverado, each with a base price of $33,000. The ‘crew cab’ editions currently account for 50% of the Silverado sales and 60% for the Sierra, but GM expects 60% for the Silverado and 65% for the Sierra by the end of this year. These new trucks also feature several advanced safety options, such as forward collision alert and lane departure warning, which the previous models do not have.

Yeah, I've heard it before and don't understand why it's news. It's something that domestic brands do extremely well. I will say after seeing them both in person at the auto show, I wouldn't be shocked if the sierra outsells the silverado. The Chevy looks odd. The Sierra pulled off the new look well. Especially the front end.

This doesn't surprise me. It reflects the company's belief that the US market is their main market (regardless of their recent success in China with Buick) and their resources (research, marketing, mfg) are geared toward this market's preference for trucks and big cars. That's also why I believe that their small to medium cars, although will try to be competitive in terms of dependability and economy, will not be as good as the small to medium family cars from Japan, Korea or Europe. You tend to do certain things better when you set your mind and body to those things. GM will do better in certain economic climates and will do worse in others.

With an improving economy it is not a surprise that the big trucks and suv's do better.Still GM as well as Ford and Chrysler are now fortifying their lineups with smaller fuel efficient cars. They may not sell as well nor is their markup anything as good as it is with the big trucks/suvs etc.. However when the economy takes a dive and the gass prices escalate they now have somthing in their inventory to turn to. The big 3 are in the excact opposite position they were in in 2008. Therefore they should better be able to weather the storm should the economy tank again.
