This is the car that will establish Lexus as a luxury mark worldwide. It's got all the right features to do battle with some of the worlds best at a lower cost. It'd be interesting to see what some of the magazines say when they perform a thorough road test. For what it's worth I like this better than the new S Class.

Lexus outdoes Mercedes any day, any time. I've never understood how people could like a Mercedes-Benz over a Lexus.

I am looking into the future and I can see the 2012 Cherry from China and all the Cherry fans talking about the cool features that are better then Lexus and less money.

00JT - if the arguement is less money then Lexus wins till the new cheeper company comes out.

IamEvilHomer - If Cherry ever produces something that is remotely as good as a Lexus, Mercedes, or BMW, then I will give them credit where credit is due.

IamEvilHomer - Acura and Infiniti are both in general cheaper than Lexus, but they are not considered as a true competitor to BMW and Mercedes.

for gods sakes logical, he bought a lexus ls, whihc is without a doubt the most refined, quiet and well equipped car on the market today. for 65k he got an absolute bargain for the ls's abilities.
i don't defend lexus very often but seriously logical, get a life.
if you don't care about "prestige" why not buy a lexus? it'll never let you down, you'll be happy with it, you'll be comfortable.
not saying lexus is better than merc or antyhing, but you can't say a lexus is a bad car. if you're an enthusiastic driver, a big car or an suv's probably not for you either. a mercedes benz s class is very nice, but when the one i want comes to 150000 dollars, a lexus is a better choice.

NOW, GENTLEMEN LET'S NOT GET TESTY WITH OUR TESTOSTERONE REBUKES.
HANDS DOWN, THE LEXUS HAS THE MORE BEAUTIFUL STYLING. EQUAL POWER, EQUAL OPTIONS/AMENITIES, BUT STYLING COUPLED WITH PERFORMANCE POINTS ME(I HAVE BOUGHT MB SOLELY SINCE 1982) TOWARDS THE LEXUS. TIME CHANGES EVERYTHING!

Looking at both cars...I see benefits to both of them. However, to me, the Lexus just has a Toyota look still, or perhaps the new Toyotas are borrowing some L-Finesse styling. I do like it from side view and rear...the front however still looks much like a Toyota and slightly bland. But this effort from Lexus is a great one and clearly rewards its rear seat passengers as Will commented on eariler. I would love to drive them both and put them to the test. I like the MBs dash better, looks a lot cleaner (a first for Mercedes since recent cars have had so many buttons)The hybrid is an interesting idea....however most people who buy this type of car can afford gas so I guess they will be making a social stance by purchasing one of those over a strictly gas engined version.

Toyota has had consistent sales success so they they need to charge 85k for Lexus' flagship - b/c they have the clout they can afford to infiltrate the luxury market with a top notch vehicle by selling it cheaper than competitors. That's genius people.

On the other hand, who does BMW and Mercedes have backing them. BMW - nobody...thus, they can take those same risks. Mercedes - Chrysler...Chrysler clearly doesn't have the same sales success as Toyota. Their minivan success is over. Therefore, they don't have the clout to back Mercedes in the same way.

Imagine if Lexus was an independent company. The LS would probably costs 80K.

Why do I say all this? Simply b/c I don't believe that you can look at the price of the LS and assume that its less expensive, therefore it must be inferior to the S-class.

I will concede that Mercedes clearly has the more prestige and history but I really believe the new LS460 is the s-class' worst nightmare.

Right on LexusIS350 although I love my SL my LS is even better I cant wait for the new LS which looks much better than a & series or a S class

I have heard it said, and I generally agree with the statement that people who buy the S class are well to do and that the people who buy the LS are well to do and are smart about how they spend.

It appears that both cars provide roughly equal amounts of comfort. I am not a 4 door luxury car driver type but if I had to pick one I would go with the one that has more bullet proof reliability and that one can only have with the Lexus.

Could someone please (from a technical standpoint, ie someone who has actually worked on/engineered the vehicles) tell me how a mercedes is a dressed up chrysler. I know chrysler has benefitted from mercedes (transmissions, chrysler crossfire, diesels) but I have not really seen the other way around. Does anyone have a solid piece of evidence to show that mercedes is just a re-badged chrysler/dodge?

It is just that we have owned many chryslers and mercedes vehicles for many many years, and they've all served us very well. We've done most repairwork on all of our cars ourselves (many engineers in the family) and I can say, chrysler seems to have benefitted the most. And for people who say that Lexus is just a spiffy toyota, that may be true in many aspects, however, toyota makes great cars. So does chrysler. (I can attest to this because I still have a '93 chrysler that was used as a winter car until this year and has only had 1 major problem a month ago--a new starter)

Acutally, the Chrysler Crossfire has a Mercedes engine in it. Please look it up.

will, you made a good point, but when i see the s class, the only part that "wow's" me is that the car is worth 100k. I would rather have the lexus.

i don't have respect for those of you who bash on the ls but have never ridden in one. first of all,efoxS4, i own an ls430 (2004) and have ridden in the s class. There is no comparison in terms of the ride. Lexus comfort and ride can not be matched. (at least in the full sized sedan segment, i haven't ridden in a gs or is) And logical, please stop talking out of your a$$. 65k for a toyota. Clearly you have never experienced an ls. I will stand firmly behind by belief that it is the single greatest luxury bargain out there, and i am sure many who have had the pleasure of owning one will agree. I have had mine for 21/2 years and have yet to experience any problem with the car. My next door neighbor has 125K miles on his '01 ls, and has never seen the repair shop. not once. I challenge anyone on this site to name me a more consistent, dependable premium luxury vehicle.
