The Mainstream Media Is DISSING The New Cherokee Design. That's A GUARANTEE People Will Love It And Become A Success
Boy does this sound familiar.
All of the mainstream media is dissing the new Cherokee design.
Except Auto Spies.
GOD, are they ever stuck in the past!
Here's just one sample article regarding the design from Fortune
"So is the new Jeep Cherokee ugly? Well, it's certainly … different. Its new nose looks a little like those found on Jeeps past. Gone are the iconic circular headlamps. In their place: sharply slanted slits. The signature seven-slot grille? Instead of standing upright, it is creased in the middle, folding over the top of the hood as if an elephant sat on the front of it mid-safari."
As they waste all their energy trying to push alternative energy vehicles that no one wants or whining that there is no manual transmission based wagon of their favorite car in the USA anymore, the WORLD of reality is passing them by.
Somehow I remember the same scenario with the BMW X6 and boy did they get their asses handed to them.
We especially remember the buff books saying how useless the BMW X6 was.
We say watch the new Cherokee set sales records as we are predicting it will become the poor man's RR Evoque.
It is so young and fresh.
And when you see it in person with those sinister looking LED's glaring at you, THEN you'll get it.
It's killer!
They couldn't see a trend if it hit them in the head.
So we ask WHO will make the right call here on the Cherokee?
The mainstream auto media or AutoSpies.com.
WHO will have the bragging rights when it's all said and done?
YOU make the call!

It's ugly. Would have much preferred a scaled down version of the current Grand Cherokee.
I think it's funny how Jeep completely changes the design strategy every time a new Cherokee/Liberty is introduced. None has been a success since the original.

Agree the winner will be the Mainstream media. Kudos to Autospies for taking an unexpected position ... but my money is on another design failure from Jeep.

Remember the Pontiac Aztek? Alot of people dissed that too.
This design makes the Jeep look like its about to tip over, while idly sitting still.

It was an UGLY SUV from Pontiac with a BUNCH of plastic cladding all over the sides. Where's all our Jeep fans who think this POS is "beautiful"; maybe we should tell BMW, Audi, MB to hurry out and hire the design team so they do NOT lose money. There could be whopping sales demand coming from this "art". Anybody believes this must be on something. This is the UGLIEST vehicle since the AMC Pacer fish bowl and Pontiac Aztec plastic mobile. We now have a NEW leader in the category of UGLIEST Motor Trend Car of the Year. WOW!!

I think I've looked at too many pictures of this thing as its starting to grow on me. Like the comments above, I thought the same thing for weeks. Interior still looks cheap in pics so will have to see it in person. Disclaimer, still wouldn't buy as its too small but will hold judgement until I see it up close.

Okay I hate the grill, but it is an SUV with real off-road capabilities, so I'm willing to cut a lot of slack.

Some of you know I don't like SUVs, and this Jeep does nothing to change my mind. In fact, the more rugged a SUV looks, the more I hate it. Maybe I will like SUV if I live in Africa or something but as long as we're talking about N. America, Europe, Asia, fuhgetaboouddit.

That dolphin color makes it look cheap on top of ugly, and the rear lights make it look like a KIA (sorry Audi, cheap prices makes it KIAs).
Fiat must like those canvas sunroofs, different but not sure if I like it.

I don't think it's ugly but even then, are SUVs supposed to be pretty? This will complete with a host of CUVs and crossovers that lean heavily on a very feminine design and I think it stands out as something different, something more masculine and in line with the values of the brand.
Granted, that light blue-grey colour is horrid but the darker blue is quite cool, IMHO.
This is a very important car for Jeep, it has to compete with high value models like the Kia Sportage and it's Hyundai sister while also try to gain interest from people shopping for the Audi Q5 and the BMW X3.
That's not an easy task but if they are going to pull it off and stand out then they need a striking design and I think this works. I think the interior is a major step forward.
Last point, the previous Liberty was a terrible design so this is a different direction but one that's needed. The Grand Cherokee is already a higher value proposition than it's competitors and creating a scaled down version would probably create a lot of sales cannibalism.
This car needs to stand on its own and say what you want but, if nothing else, it definitely does that really well.

Since you like this so much, you WILL have PLENTY of selection on the dealer lots to select from, especially in a year when they offer the BIG rebates on it. If you buy one be prepared to take a HUGE depreciation hit. Part of owning a vehicle is one that is a good looking one. I would fire the design team of person who "approved" this be built looking this nasty.

Gees, almost like you're not allowed to have an opinion. Whether something is good looking or not is extremely subjective buddy and you can't predict the future so don't pretend you know what's going to happen with sales.
I suppose with this part of your statement "Part of owning a vehicle is one that is a good looking one" you were TRYING to say that people buy vehicles they find attractive, which I would agree with but THANK GOODNESS not everyone is you.
I'm not American, I don't live there, and generally not a fan of American cars but I think this is a step in the right direction and another better American product that will do better in other markets as well.
Summary: Get over yourself, if you don't like it then buy something else. Maybe something more bland and beige so you can show everyone how bland and beige you are in your pretty car, LOL!!!

Go buy one, you will have plenty of selection from the dealer's lot to choose from. You obviously don't care about RESALE or Vehicle Depreciation either. I will put it in plain English so you can even understand this. Yes - everybody has their own taste on styling and car preferences. But whether you trade a vehicle in; sell it outright or keep it, there is a depreciation and resale value that goes along with.
Now - there are several bloggers obviously has heard about the Pontiac Aztec SUV. This plastic mobile had a few buyers as yourself that bought it. The depreciation value was just terrible; the dealership LITERALLY HID these vehicles behind their service departments. Why: they were afraid that this UGLY vehicle would actually lose sales on the other vehicles on the lot. Moreover, when you go to trade this in, there must be a DEMAND for the vehicle EVEN AS A USED VEHICLE. (Remember several years ago when the gas prices got so high for awhile everyone was trading in their gas guzzler HUGE SUVs). The dealership could not take anymore trade-ins because they couldn't get rid of those "ships" with low MPGs.
Same holds true here. Please go buy one so we can all laugh at how UGLY this is when you pull up to a stop light. It would be great to chuckle at a stop light. Then when you sell it or trade it in, just kick yourself in the a@@ for buying the piece of JUNK looking, when the dealer low balls you on the trade-in since it won't be worth anything. (Just one reason why Honda owners LOVE their Accords). Buy Away!!!

I agree with Agent 001 and Firewombat. The new Cherokee stands on its own and presents a young, fresh interpretation of iconic design cues which have been copied and pasted on Jeep models for the past 50 years. I was shocked by the design at first look as well, but I do think that it will be a much more attractive car in person and will appeal to the demographic that Jeep is targeting. If it is marketed correctly, I think it will bring young male buyers back to jeep. Most offerings in this segment are very feminine, including current jeep offerings. This appears to be the most masculine, aggressive, and capable crossover in its class. I know many recent male graduates looking for a small SUV, but settling for a sedan because too many of their girlfriends drive Tiguans or Tucsons and they can't afford the price or the gas for a larger SUV which they believe to be more masculine. While the design may be unique, you cannot automatically jump on the ugly bandwagon and shout Aztec. Like 001 pointed out, that's what everyone did with the X6 and it has been a huge sales success. The Cherokee should also not be compared to the Aztec because the Aztec was a poser of an SUV. It was a minivan with cheap plastic cladding and hinged doors. It had zero capability and awful build quality. This does not seem to be the case with the Cherokee. It seems that the Cherokee improves upon Jeep build quality and maintains Jeeps classic offroad capability. While no one here can predict the future, I believe this model will succeed.

It's not Aztek ugly, but pretty this Cherokee ain't! As long as this vehicle can live up to the Cherokee name off-road, while being a more capable vehicle than the old one, people will get over the styling and buy this car.

Almost sound like someone is a paid consultant to Jeep/Crysler.
Why would anyone care what the media (or anyone else for that matter) thinks? Don't people buy vehicles that they like?

The "mainstream media" is never right no matter how you define right. The Jeep is following the same styling cues that GM, Ford and the euro divisions follow. It's all about fashion. In the old days it was Italian, but Fiat knows what's up. Korean style and designs provide the foundation for most attractive new vehicles currently, except Audi. Audi primarily follows BMW for styling, which is an improvement for everyone including non-Audi owners. Who cares if it's even a massaged Kia Borrego? I'm not saying it is... but it wouldn't hurt if it was. Who gives a paved flat? Put it on the trail. Does it do trails like a Jeep? how will the aftermarket handle the aesthetics issue? Did some guys in Detroit get to bolt on some stuff before it rolled out? Will it break down before 100K miles for unknown reasons? Tune in next year. Maybe it will have a Hemi.
