Toyota Disputes Claim That Focus Unseated Corolla As Top Selling Car In The World
Toyota Motor Corp said on Wednesday its Corolla was the world's top selling car of 2012, contradicting rival Ford  which claimed top spot for its Focus model.

Ford said on Tuesday it sold 1.02 million Focus compact cars last year, citing data from automotive consulting firm Polk.

It did not detail Corolla sales in a press release on its website, but various media reports have cited the U.S. carmaker as saying Toyota sold 872,774 Corollas last year.

Toyota's Tokyo-based spokesman Ryo Sakai said the Japanese carmaker sold 1.16 million Corollas in 2012 and that "Toyota still sees the Corolla as the world's most popular car".

Easy question is "were the missing models included in previous years?" Give or take 200,000 units is a bit drastic, even if anti-Japan sentiment played a part in China's sales.

It's still sad how a pickup truck finished 3rd.

Haha, my sentiment about the pick up truck HughJass :-) Not to imply any sort of internet bonding (which freaks me out) but seems like we also share the same thinking about this so called Korean car greatness.

The handful of Asian friends I have (some are Korean) avoid Korean cars but they have been here a long time. I would assume the ones overseas are the same if Hyundai/KIA are starting to lose marketshare now that we can actually offer them some of our vehicles.

I'm also a bit of a greeny and I still can't believe we buy so many damn pick up trucks.

-USNA1999...I thought about it! Just kidding, look..Really, it's not a tough enough fight for me. Go figure? Hey nobodies complaining about the Focus, it's a nice little car thats done good. Let's see here, Corolla comes on the scene in like 1966 and has sold over 39 million cars as of 2012. Focus pops up in 1998, which makes the Corolla 32yrs its senior and since 98 that's a 15 yr difference. So there, it's a no brainer and no rocket science needed. Focus out sells the Corolla for the first half of 2012 making it the new King for the title of "The Worlds Top Selling Car". Then again, Ford says it sold 1.02 Million cars last year and Toyota said they sold 1.16 Million Corollas last year. So, Go figure?

You know I am just giving you a hard time, I really don't care who sells the most. BTW I think the Corolla is a better car anyways.

The difference between 0,8 M and 1,2 M is simple definition. Toyota count the Corolla derivatives (Matrix - USA, Auris - Japan/Europe...) as well. Basically these models are Corolla-s in different name. Fact is, Corolla-s are the most popular models on the world.
Ford allways try, but...

Actually....not counting the Matrix or the Auris the Corolla still sold more than the Focus. When you add the other models you get the larger gap of 1.2 million. thetruthaboutcarsdotcom

FORD - Fix Or Repair Daily. With such a legacy, Focus cannot possibly have outsold Corolla. And you just dont see that many Focuses, wherever you are on the planet.
